Algerian Vehicle Market plunged in first half 2014. Volkswagen shines.

Algerian Vehicle Market plunged in first half 2014 with a series of sixth negative year-on-year month. In the battlefield, Renault has recovered the leadership while Peugeot struggles. Emerging brands are Hyundai and Volkswagen.

In June 2014 according to data released by focus2move Research Team and collected through local sources and manufacturers, total new Light Passengers Vehicles sold have been 28.280 representing a sharp 26.6% decrease from the correspondent month last year.

Following the already weak trend the last was the 6th year-on-year declining month in a row and the first half 2014 ended with only 174.680 vehicles sold with a loss of 18.3% compared with last year.

The market is falling down more than expected and many local observers are still pessimistic about a recovery within the current year. However, Algerian government is near to launch a new five-year investment plan (2015-2019) worth $262 billion in order to boost domestic production and move its economy away from reliance on oil and gas.

The previous plan (2010-2014) outcome was disappointing due to a slow pace of reform that has limited foreign and private investors’ involvement in bringing the economy out of stagnation.

The new plan could positively impact on the automotive sector development in the next years while before to review current volume forecast it would be prudent wait for the real implementation plan.

In the market battlefield the first half was really tough with many changes in the top brands ranking month after month. The half year leader was Renault with 26.509 sales recovering the leadership lost last year, despite losing over two points of share.

The second was Peugeot scoring an awful half with only 19.788 sales and many points of share down from last year. Third was Hyundai, one of emerging brands in Algeria, with 18.900 sales and 10.8% of share, up 3.1 points form 2013.
