Argentina: auto market rose 9% in August 2012. Peugeot shines.

The Argentina car market in August 2012 posted 72.527 sales, down 9.3% from last year, moving in negative territory also the YTD data. Indeed, year-to-date August sales were 582.000, down 1.7% from last year. Renault posted a wonderful performance, while Fiat dropped in 6th position.

In August, the Argentina’s car sales were negative year-on-year for the third month in a row, penalized by a comparison with a very strong sales period, last year. We foresee this trend will continue for the next two or three months. Focus2move.com has downgraded the full year 2012 forecast at 831.000, down 2% from last year, when the market had beaten its all-time record.

This month Peugeot and Ford had performed particularly well, with 2 points of share above previous trend. However, the market leader, Volkswagen sold 13.247 vehicles with a share of 18.3%, down 0.9 points of share from the previous month and 2.6 points from the first half. The year-to-date August sales were 118.576 with a share of 20.3%

Chevrolet in 2nd position is attacking the leadership and with 11.469 sales achieved a share of 15.8%, down 0.9 points from July and year-to-date. However, the gap with Volkswagen was only 2.5 points of share the smaller since years.

Renault in 3rd place posted a positive month, after the exceptional July when achieved the 18.1% of share. In August, with 10.663 units, the share was 14.7%. Ford in 4th sold 9.585 vehicles with a share of 13.2%, up 1.9 points from the previous month and 1.2 from the first half.

Peugeot was again 5th in the month, with 8.457 units and a share of 11.7%, the best of the year, up 1.3 points from previous month and 2.3 points from the first half. Fiat was 6th with 6.743 sales and 9.3% of share, up 0.7 points of share from previous month, but down 1.7 points from the first half.

Mercedes was again the luxury segment leader of the month for the third month in a row and now is really near to outpace Audi in the year-to-date ranking.

Looking at the best models performance, the Volkswagen Gol was again the market leader in spite of it is progressively losing share. In August sales were 4.919 and the share 6.8%, down 0.8 points from the first half.

Chevrolet Classic was 2nd, with 3.330 units and a share of 4.6%, down 1.1 points of share from the previous month. Third was the Peugeot 207 with 2.726 units and a share of 3.8%, followed by the Ford Ranger (27th in the year-to-date ranking) boosted by the new generation. For the first time ever, this model is leading the pick-up segment in Argentina, outpacing the Toyota Hilux (7th with 1.925 units).

In the year-to-date ranking, the Volkswagen Suran was 4th and the Ford Ecosport 5th.
