Belarusian car market boomed in the 2017 thanks to a roaring pace taken since July, ending the year at the new record figure, near 35.000 units (excluding grey market. Renault-Nissan group dominates with near 50 percent of market share.

Belarus economy’s recovery from a two-year recession continued to firm up in the third quarter of 2017. Annual GDP growth shot up to 2.9% on the back of a jump in domestic demand, led by a surge in fixed investment. Recent data from Q4 suggests that the economy remained on course in the final quarter. Industrial production expanded at a strong pace in November, albeit moderating from October’s five-month high, and retail sales soared in the month, supported by higher wages and slowing inflation, which tumbled to an all-time low.

The automotive industry is heavily conditioned by the trend of Russian market with almost the half of vehicles registered after the import through grey market. In recent years, while internal demand was hit by economic crisis, the arrival of discounted grey vehicles from Russia has basically sustained the market volume in the range of annual 50.000 units, changing the mix between official sales (done via the official distribution network) and grey sales.

According to official data released by the Association of Car Manufacturers (not including grey market) in the 2017 light vehicles sales have been 34.911, up a robust +29.4%. Indeed the economic recovery has changed the mix between official and grey sales with only a marginal growth as total real market.
