Egypt Car Market dropped down in Q2 2015 ending a long positive string with the first half ending with sales flat over the correspondent period last year. Hyundai and Renault Groups are fast growing challenging the Chevrolet leadership.

Economic Outlook

The Egyptian economy appears to be slowing amid delays in the execution of new infrastructure projects and a loss of momentum in the government’s reform agenda. GDP expanded 3.0% in the January–March period (Q3 of FY 2015), which marked the weakest pace of growth in a year.

Moreover, industrial production contracted for the second consecutive month in May and the manufacturing PMI fell back to contraction territory in July. Meanwhile, there are high hopes that traditional sources of growth, primarily tourism and the Suez Canal, will give the economy a boost.

On 29 July, the Suez Canal Authority announced that the New Suez Canal is completely built and ready for use.

Market Outlook

During the last decade the Egyptian vehicle market has almost doubled volume albeit troubles derived by the Arab Spring events during and after the 2011.

However in the 2014 the market scored the best level ever fueled by recovering economic environment, advancing in the world’s 35th place, the third in Africa.

The 2015 started well with first quarter sales figures up 9.3% but the second quarter was harsh.

Indeed, according to data released by focus2move Research Team through local sources and the Egyptian Automotive Marketing Information Council (AMIC), total new light vehicles sold in April, May and June had been respectively 19.355, 18.195 and 21.705, down 13.4%, 15.5% and 4.3% from the correspondent month last year, breaking the 15th year on year increase in a string achieved up to March.

Consequently the first half sales had been 148.730, flat from the previous year.

Competitive Arena

In June, Chevrolet was outpaced by Hyundai as market leader respectively with 4.603 (+29.0%) and 3.991 (-13.0%) sales while the third step of the podium was taken by a roaring Renault with 2.000 units and a +244.8% year on year performance.

As far as the car group’s performance, the June performance allowed to the Hyundai Group to gain the first place with market share at 26.8% ahead of General Motors with 19.1% and Renault-Nissan with 14.2%.

As far as best-selling models ranking, the  Hyundai Verna was on top with 2.287 sales (+14.2%) ahead of Chevrolet TFR with 1.489 units (-30.1%) and Renault Logan with 934 (+567%).
