Ford advanced in 2nd place in Europe, while in March car market dropped 10%.

The European car market (EU plus EFTA zone) in March posted the 18th year-on-year decline in a row with only 1.34 million sales and a loss of 10.2% from March 2011. We report about countries in a specific document, while in this we focus on Top Brands performance.

Ford and Opel advanced respectively in second and third place, pushed by strong seasonality of the U.K. market. However, their quarter performance was stable from the previous.

Renault, Peugeot and Citroen dropped from February and their first quarter was lower than the previous.

Following a recovery started during the ending quarter of 2012, Fiat (the brand alone, not the Group) in March was again positive with share improved at 4.7%.

Looking at the Top Brands performance:

Volkswagen had lost share, as almost at the end of each quarter. This time the loss was significant with March at 11.6%, down 1.3 points from February. The first quarter ended with 376.146 sales and a share of 12.2%, the lowest in the last 4 quarters.

Ford advanced in second place pushed by strong March seasonality for the UK market, the only one where Ford is leader in Europe. Sales were 110.243 with a robust share increase of 1.7 points at 8.2%. First quarter sales were 225.447 with a share of 7.3%, absolutely flat over the previous 3 quarters.

Opel/Vauxhall rose in third, recovering the position gained in the full year 2012, thanks to the strong UK market. Sales were 99.595 with a share of 7.4%, up 1.4 points from the previous month. First quarter share at 6.8% was up 0.3 points from Q4 2012.

Renault was the loser of the month, dropping in 4th place with 78.085 sales and 5.8% of share, down 1.2 points from the previous month. First quarter sales were 193.402 with a share of 6.2%, down 1.1 points from Q4 2012.

Peugeot was 5th, down 3 spots from February, selling 76.697 units with a share of 5.7%, down 1.0 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 189.036 with a share of 6.1%, down 0.1 points from the previous quarter and the worst quarter in last 4.

Audi was 6th selling 76.401 units with a share of 5.7%, up 0.5 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 169.823 with a share of 5.5%, up 0.3 points from Q4 2012.

BMW was 7th selling 70.592 units with a share of 5.2%, up 0.4 points from the previous month. First quarter sales were 157.927 with a share of 5.1%, down 0.5 points from the last quarter

Mercedes was 8th with 66.352 sales and a share of 4.9%, up 0.2 points of share from the previous month. First quarter sales were 150.739 with a share of 4.9%, flat from the previous quarter.

Fiat was 9th with 63.149 sales and 4.7% of share. First quarter sales were 153.736 and a share of 5.0%, the best quarter in the last three.

Citroen was 10th, down 3 spots from the previous month, selling 61.476 units with a share of 4.6%, down 1.0 points of share from the previous month. First quarter sales were 156.188, with a share of 5.0%, down 0.2 from the previous.
