France new car market up 9% in September ending a fast Q3 2015 albeit moderate economic improvements and syill low consumer and business confidence. Peugeot 208 on top of model ranking in September.

Economic Outlook

France’s GDP recorded zero growth in Q2, coming in below Q1’s 0.7% expansion and marking a one-year low. Weak domestic demand dragged on growth despite improvements in the external sector. However, more recent data points to improving economic conditions in Q3.

In September, the composite PMI improved and both consumer and business confidence rose to levels last seen in eight and four years, respectively.

On a negative note, on 18 September, Moody’s downgraded the country’s credit rating from Aa1 to Aa2 with a stable outlook. Moody’s commented that France’s economy has shown continuous weakness and that this is in addition to institutional and political constraints weighing on the medium-term outlook. Finance Minister Michel Sapin reacted by reaffirming the government’s commitment to economic reforms and highlighted recent positive economic and budgetary data.

Market Outlook

The shy recovery scored last year, when the new vehicles market has broken a four years decline, is live again this year albeit weak domestic economic demand and low GDP performance.

According to data released by CCFA, the French Associations of Car Manufacturers, following a first half 6.1% growth, the third quarter of the year had been positive again with July sales at 147.150 (+2.4%), August at 92.052 (+10.0%) and September at 164.774 (+9.1%).

During the first nine month of the year new car passengers sales had been 1.421.440, up 6.3% from the correspondent month last year.

Competitive Arena

In September, Renault has sold 34.347 cars (+3.5%) with 20.7% of market share and was followed by Peugeot with28.522 (+5.8%), Citroen with 16.834 (-12.7%), Volkswagen with 11.118 (+11.5%), Dacia with 7.549 (+11.5%) and Nissan with 6.959 (+20.25%).

As far as the Group’s performance, Renault-Nissan overtook PSA with 29.7% of market share, 0.6 points more than the rival. Behind Volkswagen Group with 12.0% and BMW with 4.4%

As far as best-selling models ranking, the Peugeot 208 took the leadership in September with 9.089 sales (+22.7%), followed by Renault Clio with 8.750 (-9.7%), Renault Captur with 6.863 (+12.7%) and Peugeot 308 with 6.373 (+4.5%).
