Volkswagen brand takes global car market leadership thanks to the astonishing performance in China. In January, the German brand overtook Toyota with 620.000 global sales versus 612.000 of the rival.

In January 2015 according to data collected by focus2move Research Team in over 120 markets, the total new Light Passengers Vehicles global market grew 3.9% from the correspondent month last year at 7.2 million units.

Data reports a ranking we would never expect to see. Indeed, Toyota uses to hold leadership in the global Light Passengers Vehicles (cars+ LCvs, not including heavy trucks and bus) market with a couple of points of share on the second brand.

But this time the N°1 was not Toyota, but Volkswagen.

We are talking about BRANDS not GROUPS and this data surprised our analysts that had to check in detail the reasons of this surprisingly results.

Volkswagen has sold 620.253 units in January with a robust double-digit increase from the correspondent month last year (+62.000 units) mainly thanks to the amazing performance scored in China with 330.000 sales, +72.000 from January 2014.

Others relevant growth were taken in Germany (+6.000 units or 12.4%) and in almost all European countries. Negative data were reported from Brazil (-16.000 units or -28.5%), Argentina (-6.500 or -32.4%) and Russia (-2.500 or 12.9%).

Toyota in January has sold 612.658 units, down 2.9% from last year, the first Y.o.Y. negative split in three years, losing 25.000 units in Japan (-19.3%), 8.000 in China (-10.4%), 6.000 in Thailand (-23.3%), only partially balanced by the +18.000 units gained in the USA (+14.1%).

At current pace, Volkswagen would challenge Toyota at least for this quarter, but Chinese sales speed should not be maintained for long time exceeding current local production capacity.

All data regarding the “others” brand have lost of relevance this month.

We just picked up the ChangAn performance (10th with 155.251, +74.5%) due to a spectacular Chinese performance.
