Ireland Car Market in Q1 2016 kept the amazing speed improving 28.5% fueled by the fastest  economic growth rate in the European Union. Volkswagen leadership is challenged by Hyundai and Volkswagen.

Market Outlok

Ireland is one of the few bright spots among advanced economies as it recorded the fastest growth rate in the European Union in 2015. The positive momentum from last year carried into 2016, although the latest indicators showed that economic headwinds are appearing.

Following the strong acceleration in sales started already two years ago, the Irish car market kept momentum in the first quarter 2016 projecting the 2016 over the 150.000 units.

According to data released by the S.I.M.I. the Society of Irish Car Manufacturers, the car passengers sales in January had been 39.812, up 33.6%, followed by a robust February with 21.576, up 36.7% and a less intense March with 21.532 units, up 13.7%.

During the first quarter, total cars passenger sold had been 82.920, up 28.5% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Competitive Arena

In the first quarter 2016 the brand leader was Toyota with 9.197 sales  (+28.8%) and 11.1% of market share. Hyundai was second with 8.806 units (+43.7%) ahead of Volkswagen with 8.557 (+8.2%), Ford with 8.424 (+27.0%), Nissan with 7.384 (+24.9%).

Others great performances by Skoda with 5.299 sales (+31.1%) and Renault with 5.064 (+46.3%).

As far as the Car Groups performance, the leader was Volkswagen Group with 22.6% of market share, ahead of Renault-Nissan with 17.9%, Hyundai-Kia with 15.0% and Toyota with 11.5%.

As far as the best-selling models performance, a new leader in on top thanks to the tremendous success of the new Hyundai Tucson, sold in 4.331 units a huge gap over the former leader, the Volkswagen Golf at 2.871 sales (-11.1%) followed by the Ford Focus with 2.868 (+11.9%), the Nissan Qashqai with 2.703 (+27.9%), the Skoda Octavia with 2.686 (+36.3%) and the Toyota Corolla with 2.350 (+15.1%).
