The year-to-date sales in May were 266.216, down 21.6%. However, the market exceeded the forecast by 3.000 units. In the next months, the comparison with 2011 will become easier, considering the negative trend started in July 2011.
Focus2move forecast for June 75.000 units, down 6% from last year, while for the entire 2012 the market is projected at 812.000 units, down 7% from 2011, the all-time record year.
The Turkey GDP year-on-year rate rose from 6.4% in December 2010 to 10.4% in December 2011. In April 2012 the rate surged to 11.1%, its highest level since October 2008, driven by some tariffs and clothing prices. The central bank recently confirmed its inflation forecast at 6.5% at the end of 2012, while pushing back to the end of 2014 (from mid-2013) achievement of the targeted 5% rate.
In the course of 2011, the central bank kept the benchmark rate within a range defined by the 7-day repo rate, currently at 5.75%, and the overnight financing rate. Last February the rate, as a result of easing tensions on the international capital markets, and of downside pressures on the Turkish currency, was cut by 1 point to 11%.
In 2011, the public deficit amounted to 1.4% of GDP, below the initial target (2.8%), thanks to much stronger economic growth and a higher inflation rate than estimated in the 2011 Budget (4.5% and 5% respectively). The Budget for 2012 targets a deficit of 1.5% of GDP.
In May, the domestic light vehicles market leader, Fiat, sold 11.158 vehicles with a share of 15.7%, in line with current trend. After the strong performance posted by Volkswagen in April, May was the month of Ford, able to register 10.667 units with a spectacular share of 15.1%. Ford surpassed Volkswagen and Renault achieving the 2nd position in the year-to-date ranking.
Volkswagen was third in the month, with 8.865 units and a share of 12.5%, down 0.8 points of share from previous month. However in the year-to-date ranking stands fourth, because Renault is still third having sold 200 more units. In May Renault performance was bad, with only 7.686 units and a share of 10.8%, down 1.8 points from April. In June Renault will lose the 3rd position in the year-to-date ranking, if it will not be able to strongly react.
The fifth player, Opel, posted a great month, with 5.041 units and 7.1% of share, up 2.0 from previous month. Opel recent performances are up and down and its Executive Team is looking for the right recipe to constantly win.
Hyundai, 6th in the year-to-date ranking, will try to forget this month. Selling only 3.211 units, Hyundai share of market dropped at 4.5%, down 1.6 points, the worst in 2 years.
In the luxury segment, the leader was Mercedes, performing particularly well in May, with 1.747 sales and 2.5% of share.
