June was better than expected for the car market in France waiting for the first political decision of the new government, arrived in the first week of July. Government announced a strong taxation increase for the high incomes, restoring the taxations reduced by the former Sarkozy's government.
In the short term the new economical policy applied in France will not affect the car market, being focused on "rich" people and not on middle and low classes. In addition, the government has not excluded the possible introduction of incentives for the car sector to sustain national production and market volumes.
Good news for the sector for the next months. However, in case of the global recession will not expire in short, France will need to introduce new taxes to respect the 2013 task of National budget deficit below 3% of GDP. Looking at May performances, Renault recovered after a negative May, selling 40.280 units with a share of 19.3%, up 1.1 points of share from previous month. In spite of the new 208 success, Peugeot suffered again, selling 33.133 units with a share of 15.9%, stable on May. Citroen was third, with 30.625 sales and 14.7% of share, up 1.0 points from previous month.
Volkswagen was again the importers leader with 15.975 units and a share of 7.6%, down 0.4 from previous month.
Ford sold 9.777 units, losing in the month the 5th position, with a share at 4.7% down 0.5 points, at the lowest share of the year.
Opel was 5th in the month with 10.431 sales and 5.0% of share, the best of the year.
Looking at brands behind, Dacia, Nissan and Hyundai performed well in the month, while Chevrolet, Seat and Volvo had lost share.

Looking at the single model performance, the Citroen C4 family gained the market leadership in June, with 9.443 sales and a share of 4.5%, up 0.6 from previous month, surpassing the Renault Clio, which was sold in 9.097 units with a share of 4.4% down 0.8 from previous month, the worst share of the year.
The Renault Scenic was third in the month with 8.658 sales and 4.1% of share, up 1.0 points, ahead of Renault Megane and Citroen C3. The new Peugeot 208 was sixth with 7.440 units and 3.6% of market share.
