Drivers for strong July car sales were the continued unleashing of pent-up demand, with the average vehicle on the road being about 11 years old. "We're seeing the need-based buyer in the market," said Edmunds.com Senior Analyst Jessica Caldwell, noting that Edmunds.com data showed the average trade-in in July was 6 years old, about the same as every month in 2012 but far higher than in years past. The unleashing of pent-up demand is supported by wider credit availability as indicated by attractive interest rates and lease deals on the market.
For the entire 2012, Focus2move.com is holding the forecast at 14.2 million vehicles, up 11.3% from last year.
After three outstanding months in a row, Ford in July had lost share, selling 166.507 vehicles with a share of 14.4%, down 1.1 points of share from June and 0.7 from the cumulate first half. The month was not easy for Ford, considering that the Escape was hit with a high-profile recall of certain models to prevent potential engine fires and thousand vehicles were damaged by hail. Also, the F-Series full-size pickup had a flat month despite of the discontinued Ranger midsize pickup now is all but gone from dealer lots.
Toyota surpassed Chevrolet recovering the 2nd place in the market with 139.759 units and a share of 12.1%, up 0.5 points from previous month.
After the outstanding June performance, Chevrolet suffered in July, with only 138.942 sales and a share of 12.0%, down 2.0 points from June, the worst share of the 2012.
