Malaysia New Vehicles Registration down in May for the fifth month in a row as the Malaysia’s economy is expanding at the slowest pace in last years. Volkswagen, Mazda and Mitsubishi are shining.

Market Outlook

Malaysia’s economy expanded at the slowest pace since the financial crisis in the first quarter of the year, growing 4.2% annually. Although the result is the latest in a series of quarterly deceleration, the figure beat market expectations and indicates still-robust growth despite a broad slowdown across emerging economies.

According to data released by the M.A.A., the Malaysian Automotive Association, following the near 25% lost reported for the first quarter, in April and May market keep falling with sales respectively at 42.179 (-9.5% ) and 44.669 (-12.8%). So recent month data were a little better but still below the expectations for a market usually almost stable.

Year to date May sales had been 218.101, down 17.6 from the same period of last year.

Competitive Arena

Data by brand are available for April.

Perodua confirmed the leadership with 14.898 sales  (-15.2%) and 35.3% of market share. Honda was second with 5.964 units (-9.1%) ahead of Proton with 4.477 (-10.0%), Toyota with 4.089 (-32.2%), Nissan with 3.015 (+0.4%), Volkswagen with 1.407 (+105.7%) and Mazda with 1.305 (+85.1%).

Below, Mitsubishi posted a great performance with sales up 182%.

As far as the Car Groups performance, Perodua was again the leader with 35.3% of market share, ahead of Honda with 14.1%, Toyota with 11.4%, Proton with 10.6% and Renault-Nissan with 7.2%.
