Malaysian Car Market rose 1% in Q1 2014. Toyota shines.

Malaysian Car Market

Malaysian Car Market rose 1% in Q1 2014, posting a fast recover after the January fall. Indeed the market is expected to growth at least 4% this year, despite the all-time record volume hit in 2013, but uncertain economic policy on the automotive sector could depress the consumer demand.

In March, accordingly with data released M.A.A., the Malaysian Automotive Association, total new light passengers vehicles (cars plus light commercial vehicles) sold have been 58.709, up 1.9% from year ago. First quarter total car passengers sales have been 158.933, up 0.8% from year ago.

The domestic carmaker and market leader Perodua has started the year falling at 24% from the 29.9% of the 2013. Albeit a recovery shown in the following two month, first quarter sales at 44.024 were the 27.6% of market share, down 2.3 points from the previous year.

The other domestic producer, Proton, ranked second did a bit better with 32.734 sales in the quarter with share at 20.6%, down 0.6 points from last year.

Third was Toyota was in great shape with 9.886 sales in March and 24.185 in the quarter with share respectively at 16.8% and 15.2%

Three Japanese brands follow, with Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi that reported quarterly sales respectively for 4.915, 3.994 and 1.560 units.

In seventh place Ford with 1.049 with share at 1.8%, a bit better than Volkswagen in eighth place with 977 sales and share at 1.7%.
