Japan Vehicle Market was flat in June ending a sharp first half with observers outlook positive for the remaining part of the year. Toyota gained share and is near 30 percent while only the importers reported strong increase led by Mercedes.

Economic Outlook

Revised data confirmed that growth strengthened in Q1, mainly due to favorable labor market conditions and solid corporate profits. Recent economic indicators highlight, however, that growth remains fragile. Although growth in machinery orders accelerated in April, the manufacturing PMI dipped into negative territory in June and industrial production contracted in May.

In an attempt to revive growth, on 11 June, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe unveiled a draft for the revision of the Japan Revitalization Strategy. Despite the proposal’s lack of details, it is clear that the blueprint focuses on improving productivity via information technology and investment in human resources.

Moreover, on 22 June, Japanese authorities released an outline of the fiscal strategy for the next few years. The project seeks to boost growth in order to reduce public debt instead of cutting spending or raising taxes.

Market Outlook

In June, according to data released by JADAJAMA and JAIA, the Japanese Associations of car manufacturers, new Light Passengers Vehicles sold have been 441.269, down only 0.2% from the correspondent month last year .

The last was the 6th fall in a series while in the next future the market is expected to recovery.

During the first half of the year total sales reached the 2.67 million unit, down 9.3% from first half 2014.

Competitive Arena

While in the entire half the Toyota performance was disappointing, in June it was up 3 percent at 128.261 units with market share at 29.1%. All immediate followers have lost terrain with Honda in second losing 7.5% at 67.460 units, Daihatsu in third down 7.5% at 55.525, Suzuki in fourth down 21.3% at 53.260 and Nissan in fifth down 6.5% at 48.658.

Mazda in sixth improved 48% at 21.289, but the reason is more in the really poor performance in June 2014 than in a strong actual. Indeed market share at 4.8% was the lower in the last months.

Importers leader, Mercedes improved 52.1% at 6.346 reaching 1.4% of market share, followed by Volkswagen with 5.433 sales and BMW with 5.175.

As far as ranking by group, Toyota Group dominates with June market share at 43.8% followed by Honda at 15.3%, Suzuki at 12.1%, Renault-Nissan at 11.1% and Mazda at 4.8%.

As far as the best-selling models, the June leader was the Toyota Aqua with 18.087 sales (-8.7%) followed by the Honda N-Box with 16.871 (+20.2%), the Daihatsu Tanto with 14.140 (-33.7%), the Toyota Corolla with 13.542 (+35.7%), the Daihatsu Move with 11.820 (-11.5%) and the Nissan Dayz with 11.320 (-12.2%).
