Flash Reports

March 2014 consolidated Spanish car market recovery. Nissan Qashqai N°1.

In March 2014, accordingly with data released by ANIACAM, the Spanish Association of car importers, and ANFAC, the Spanish Association of car makers, the Car Passengers registered have been 79.990, up 10.0% from last year, posting the 7th year-on-year increase in a row.  First quarter 2014 figures have been 202.189, up 11.9%.

Light Commercial Vehicles sold in March have been 9.279, up 24.5%. First Quarter sales have been 24.693, up 39.4%. More than the car passenger performance, the LCV represent a strong barometer on the Spanish economy recovery. This market last month posted the 12th consecutive year-on-year growth.

Spain’s economy continued to recover despite it is technically again in recession with Q4 2013 down 0.2% while it was the strongest in more than two years. The economy recovery should gradually gain momentum in the coming quarters but remain under pressure from high private and public debt. Anyhow, the new vehicles demand will depend by government incentive ending with strong sales in the next quarter before to assist at a new sharp decline. Of course, if government will not change actual plans.

In March, Volkswagen was back on top of the list with 7.274 sales and 9.1% of share, ending the quarter at 9.0% of share, up 0.2 points from 2013. The former leader, Opel, was second with 6.789 sales and 8.5% of share, with quarterly share up 1.0 points from last year.

Ford advanced in third place with 6.143 sales and 7.7% of share and despite an awful January ended the quarter in 5th place with share at 6.6%, flat from last year. The “domestic” player, Seat was only fourth with 6.112 sales and 7.6% of share, ending the quarter in second place.

New Nissan Qashqai landed in pole position with 1.060 retails and 7.4% of share, over 300 units better than the second, Volkswagen Golf, and 400 units more than the third, Ford Focus. It is easy to foreseen the Nissan compact SUV as best-selling model in Spain this year.
