Spain vehicles market 2015 was above 1 million units, sixth years later sustained by the government scrappage incentives and the manufacturers contribution. The Seat Leon confirmed the leadership.

Economic Outlook

Spain’s economy moderated slightly in the third quarter, yet growth remained robust. The loss of momentum was driven by a deterioration in the external sector, while strong domestic demand continued to allow the economy to outperform many of its European peers. Renewed consumer confidence, rising employment and a less tight fiscal position drove the gains at home.

On the political front, a more fragmented parliament emerged following the 20 December election, setting the stage for weeks of political uncertainty and government inaction. While the governing People’s Party won the most seats, the result marked the worst performance ever for the PP and cemented the end of the political duopoly that has characterized Spanish politics for decades.

The PP or opposing PSOE has held a majority government for more than the past 30 years and coalition governments are unchartered territory. Moreover, there is no clear natural alliance that would hold a majority of seats and early elections are a possibility.

Market Outlook

Incentives to purchase a new cars are just few in Europe and usually are focused on the replacement of vehicles with traditional engines with more ecologic hybrid or electric vehicles. Spain is the only country with a scrap incentive scheme in place (the PIVE program) supporting the replacement with over 12 years old cars with a new one.

The Spanish government-backed subsidy scheme to boost new vehicle acquisitions has helped spur purchases over the last two years. In November, the government said it planned to renew the scheme for the eighth time until the middle of the next year. Under the scheme, owners who scrap their cars and buy a new one get 2,000 euros, half of which is provided by the government and half from the carmaker.

There are no signs that the speed will be reduced by the booming market as the government persist in sustaining the substitution of obsolete, high polluting vehicles, with new low emission vehicles.

In December the market was still positive with sales up 21.5% at 89.211 units, posting the 28th year-on-year growth in a row.

In the full year 2015, according to data released by the ANIAC  and the ANIACAM, the Spanish Associations of Car Manufacturers and Dealers, the total new car passengers sold have been 1.034.794, +21.0% from the previous year. After sixth years the market has finally outpaced the quota of 1 million units.

Competitive Arena

In December Peugeot scored a great final rush jumping on top of the list with 7.600 sales (+31.1%) ahead of the annual leader, Volkswagen with 7.072 units (+17.0%) and Ford with 6.534 (+4.6%).

Behind, Renault with 6.516 (+9.0%), Seat with 6.327 (+2.6%) and the roaring Hyundai with 5.838 (+106.9%) fueled by the new Tucson launch.

As far as the car group’s performance and ranking, the leader was Volkswagen with 19.9% of market share, ahead of Renault-Nissan with 17.8% and P.S.A. with 14.0%.

Winning in December, the Seat Leon confirmed the leadership in the market for the second consecutive year. In December it was sold in 3.283 units (+24.1%) and was followed by the Seat Ibiza with 2.447 (+9.1%) and the Dacia Sandero with 2.414 (+565%). The new Hyundai Tucson advanced in 8th place with 1.909 sales.
