2013 Taiwan Car Market hit all-time record. Mercedes & RAV4 best of the Year.

Accordingly with data released by Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufacturing Association, in December 2013 the light passenger vehicle market posted again a double digit increase, the third in a row. Total sales were 39.003, up 13.0% from last year, posting the fourth double-digit increase in a row.

Full Year was the new all-time record volume at 379.054, up 3.7% from year ago. This volume was better than the 2011 record, at 374.770 units.

Sharing general evaluation on Brands & Models performance, based not only on volume but also on results compared with potential, focus2move Team quoted the Best of the Year 2013, as Brand and Model. This was the result:

Brand of Year was Mercedes ranked in 6th place and best luxury brand, able to improve share at 4.3%, up 0.7 points from 2012 and 0.8 points from 2011. Second was Honda ranking in 4th with share at 6.8%, up 0.9 points from 2012. Third was Ford in 5th, with share at 6.2%, up 1.1 points from 2012.

Model of Year was Toyota RAV4, ranked 4th, thanks to the success of new model, with share at 4.2%, up 2.0 points. Second was Ford Focus, ranked in 9th with share of 2.8%, doubled from 2012. Third was the Honda CR-V in 5th with share at 3.9% from 2.2% last year.

Looking at the top brands performance:

Toyota sold 12.068 light vehicles with share at 30.9%, up 0.1 points from November. Full Year sales were 115.639, the new record in this country, with a more than outstanding 30.5% of share, a bit lower than in 2012. Of course, Toyota dominated the model ranking, with Corolla leader, Wish second (4th in December), RAV4 in fourth (2nd in December), Camry 7th, Yaris 8th, Vios 11th and Innova 13th. Fundamentally, Toyota models lead any segment of the market.

Nissan was second selling almost on third of Toyota, with 4.357 units and 11.2% of share, down 2.9 points from the previous month. Full Year Nissan sold 44.175 vehicles with share at 11.7%, flat from last year. In full year 2013, the bestselling model was the Tiida, in third, (5th in December) while Livina ranked 6th and Sentra 31st (8th in December.

Mitsubishi was third with 3.378 sales and a share of 8.7%, down 0.9 points of share from the previous month and one of the worst in last decade. Full Year sales were 42.565 with a share of 11.2%, down 2.0 points from 2012. The top model in 2013 was the Veryca in 10th, while Delica was 12th and Colt Plus 14th.

Honda recovered the fourth place selling 3.095 units with a share of 7.9%, up 2.0 points from the previous month. Full Year sales were 25.910 with a share of 6.8%, up 1.1 points from last year. The best-selling model was the CR-V ranked 5th, with Civic 18th and Fit in 21st.

Ford in 5th and best non-Japanese with 2.509 sales and 6.4% of share, up 0.5 points from the previous month. Full Year Ford was 5th as well with 23.395 sales and a share of 6.2%, up 1.1 points from last year. The top model was Focus ranked 9th (6th in December), Fiesta was 36th, while the Kuga, launched in September ranked 40th (16th in December).

BMW advanced in 6th, up 1 spot, with 1.969 sales and 5.0% of share. Full Year it ranked 9th with 14.256 and 3.8% of share, up 0.4 points from 2012 and 0.5 from 2011. Best-selling model in the year was Series 5 in 27th (22nd in December) just ahead of last generation of Series 3, ranked 29th (18th in December).

Mercedes was 7th with 1.691 sales and 4.3% of share, down 0.2 points from November. Full Year Mercedes confirmed its leadership among luxury brands selling 16.146 cars, around 2.000 more than BMW. The best-selling model was the C Class in 20th.
