Taiwan Vehicles sales slow down in the second quarter 2015 while stand on highest level ever in the cumulative figures.  Full year sales are forecast still above the last year record albeit uncertain are growing.

Country Outlook

Taiwan’s economy slowed slightly in the first quarter of 2015, growing 3.4% over the same period of the previous year (Q4 2014: +3.5% year-on-year). However, the slowdown came largely on the back of falling government spending.

Moreover, recent data paint a hazy picture of the economy. In April, exports recorded the largest drop in over a year and the manufacturing PMI fell into contractions territory for the first time since July 2013.

Meanwhile, political leaders from Taiwan and China met on 4 May for the first time in six years. The talks were aimed at increasing economic cooperation between the two sides of the strait and have been seen as a move by the Taiwanese government to generate support before the 2016 elections

Market Outlook

Taiwanese automotive sector was severely hits by the 2009 global financial crisis but had the power to recover fast and in the last two years the full year sales volume was at the best level ever.

The 2015 started surprisingly fast again with first quarter sales rose 7.4%. In the second quarter the market is performing shy with April -1.3% and May -6.1%, according to data released by the Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufacturing Association.

Indeed mMay sales were 34.478 for a cumulative figures at 174.989, up 2.7%, still projecting a new record for this year.

Competitive Arena

Toyota market share at 28.3% in May is at highest level ever albeit sales were down at 9.743 (-13.1%. Down sales for the second as well as Nissan registered 3.825 units. The third was Mitsubishi with 3.634 sales (+3.9%).

As far as the group’s performance, the leader Toyota Group hit a share of 31.8% in May, ahead of Renault-Nissan Alliance with 11.1% and Mitsubishi with 10.5%.

As far as best-selling models ranking, the Toyota Corolla sold more than the double than the second with 3.057 sales (-24.9%) followed by the Toyota Yaris with 1.390 (+38.0%) and the Toyota RAV4 with 1.372 (+5.5%). Last generation X-Trail landed in fourth place with 1.343 sales.
