Paraguay 2021. Sales remain down 12.7% in Q1, while Kia grows 21.6%

Paraguay vehicles market in March 2021 reverses the negative trend of the previous months. In fact, 2.206 units have been sold in March (+18.7%), leading Q1 sales at 5.854 (-12.7%). The leader Volkswagen holds 25.4% market share and grows 6.1% YTD.

Market Trend in March

In March, the Paraguay vehicle market reports a trend reversal and starts recovering effectively compared to the first two months of the year. Indeed, 2.206 units were sold in March 2021 (+18.7%), leading Q1 sales at 5.854 sales, a 12.7% decrease in sales compared to 2020.

Brand-wise, the leader Volkswagen grew 6.1% Year to Date, followed by Kia which gained 21.6% sales and reported the largest growth. The worst performance on the leaderboard was reported by Mercedes, which increased sales by only 1%.

Medium-Term Market Trend

The market in recent years suffered heavy losses and in 2016 sales declined 15.3% from the previous year at a negative peak of 20.802. Since early 2017 the market started to recover and the total light-vehicle sales have been 27.851, up 33.9%. In 2018 the scenario further improved and the automotive industry scored a new all-time record, ending with 35.403 sales (+27.1%).

However, as reported by the local Automotive Manufacturers Association in 2019 the market reported a sharp sales drop (-15%) with 30.097 units sold.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic sales fell in  2020. In fact, 23.273 units have been sold, reporting a decline of 22.7% compared to 2019.

In January 2021 the market started the new year on a very negative tone with 1.549 units sold, a 43.7% decrease compared to the previous year, and it remained flat in February, with 2.099 units sold.
