Asean best selling cars 2018 ranking confirms the leadership under the Toyota Hilux. The best model in Malaysia, the Perodua Axia, advanced in the third step of the podium while the new Mitsubishi Xpander, already best model in Indonesia, landed in eight place.

Economic Environment
ASEAN economy expanded 4.8% year-on-year in the fourth quarter of 2018, marking an uptick from Q3’s revised 4.6% expansion (previously reported: +4.7% year-on-year). The Malaysian economy accelerated from the third quarter thanks to a marked recovery in the external sector. Moreover, private consumption continued to rocket, spurred by wage growth, and minimal price pressures due to government tax changes and lower oil prices.
Similar dynamics were at play in the Philippines, which also gathered some momentum from Q3. Robust private consumption was supported by lower unemployment and solid remittances growth, while a lower oil import bill caused the external sector to strengthen. In Thailand, healthy consumer spending and private investment supported economic activity.
Best Selling Cars
In the 2018 the consumer’s demand for new four-wheeler vehicles was almost positive in the ASEAN region, with total light vehicles in the region (all the ten countries) at 3.338.000 units, up a robust 6.6% from the previous year.
With regard to the regional best selling cars ranking the leadership is still in the hands of the Toyota Hilux, produced in Thailand, well ahead of the list with 192.000 sales booming 27.3% from the previous year .
In second place with a growing gap to the leader, the Isuzu D-Max, produced in Thailand as well, with 156.340 sales (+6.0%)
Third was the model leader in Malaysia, the Perodua Axia with 102.000 sales (+27.0%) followed by the Toyota Vios with 101.630 units (-16.6%), the traditional leader in Indonesia (but not this year) and the MPV Toyota Avanza with 97.017 (-28.6%)
In sixth place the Toyota Innova with 94.900 units (-6.3%) followed by the Honda City with 94.000 (+4.5%).
The new star is in 8th place, the Mitsubishi Xpander, already on top in Indonesia, with 91.807 sales and is ahead of the Honda HR-V with 88.600 (-2.5%) and in 10th place the Ford Ranger with 84.200 (+9.5%).
