Economic Environment
Slovenian economy decelerated to a four-year low in the third quarter, as the broad European pullback hampered the export-oriented economy. Notably, export growth slowed amid deteriorating demand in the all-important automotive sector, which, in turn, prompted industrial production to lose traction through the quarter. On the upside, domestic demand strengthened in Q3 after having lost steam in the previous two quarters; an acceleration in private consumption and government spending more than offset a slump in fixed investment growth.
Turning to the fourth quarter, available data points to continued weakness. A downturn in retail sales in October, coupled with deteriorating consumer sentiment in October–November, point to easing household spending. Moreover, business sentiment tumbled to a near five-year low in November, which could weigh on capital investment.
