Spain Auto Sales hit the brakes in March after 30 months. The first quarter 2016 ended up by 7% reducing the full year expectations. Opel gains terrain sustained by demand on Corsa and Astra.

Market Outlook

Sustained by a long scrap incentive scheme, Spanish market started a recovery series in September 2013 running up for all the following 30 month until March 2016, when the series ended with a little -0.2%. PIVE scrap incentives has probably ended its rule and while it is still in place just few consumers are attracted again.

In March according to data released by the ANIAC  and the ANIACAM, the Spanish Associations of Car Manufacturers and Dealers, the total new car passengers sold have been 112.122, (-0.2%).

During the first quarter sales had been 286.167, up 7.1% from the previous year but stil far from the record scored in the 2006 with 413.295 units. Now the year is not more projected to grow in double digit.

Competitive Arena

The Spanish is actually the less concentrated market in Europe. Consider that the top 10 brands share in March was only 64.2%. However, it seems that this year a leader is without risk the German Opel, fueled by strong demand on the European Car of the Year, the last generation Astra. In March Opel sold 9.299 cars (+10.8%) ending the first quarter up 26.5% and gaining share at 8.7%.

In March Peugeot advanced in second place, up 3 spots from February, with 8.493 units (+7.7%) ahead of the last year leader, Volkswagen with 7.767 units (-16.7%).

In fourth place Seat with 7.761 (-12.1%) followed by Citroen with 7.253 (-1.0%), Renault with 7.127 (-14.0%), Nissan with 6.839 (-17.3%),   Ford with 6.345 (-26.2%), Kia with 5.665 (+14.2%) and in 10th place Toyota with 5.381 (+7.7%).

At group-wise, the first quarter leader was Volkswagen with 21.9% of market share followed by Renault Nissan with 14.6% and PSA with 13.6%.

Seat Leon was again on top of the model list with 3.609 units (+1.8%) with Seat Ibiza in second with 3.293 (-16.3%) ahead of the Opel Corsa with 2.897 (+13.0%), the Nissan Qashqai with 2.591 (-21.7%), the Dacia Sandero with 2.576 (+27.0%), the Peugeot 308 with 2.523(+27%), the Volkswagen Polo with 2.485 (-23.4%) and the Peugeot 208 with 2.242 (-9.3%).
