Definition
It is defined a mid-size car in the North American/Australian standard an automobile with a size equal to or greater than that of a compact. In Europe mid-sizer are referred to as D-segment or large family cars. Vehicles have a length between the 4.4 and 4.6 meters and include all bodies such as sedan, hatch, coupe, MPV and SUV. In our ranking we do not include SUVs and MPVs reported in the dedicated ranking.

Ranking
During the 2016 the mid-size segment increased 0.7% at  global level with preliminary global volumes reported at 10.7 million units.
Despite the leader is still there after over 10 years of leadership, the top of the segment is almost dynamic with three new entrance within the top 10.
Despite losing volume and having reduced the gap over the followers, the leader is yet the Toyota Camry with 659.000 units (-11.7%) while the Honda Accord advanced in second place with 550.000 sales (+0.7%) gaining one spot as done by the third, the Volkswagen Lavida with 546.000 units (+15.6%), both challenging the leader.
In fourth place, down 2 spots, the Volkswagen Passat with 526.000 units (-9.2%) followed by the Hyundai Sonata with 382.000 sales (-15.0%), the Nissan Sylphy with 375.000 sales (+8.9%), the Buick Excelle Gt up 5 spots with 373.000 (+28.6%) and the Chevrolet Malibu with 364.000 (+15.8%).
In ninth place the Mercedes C Class with 359.000 units (-4.8%) followed by the Nissan Altima with 334.000 (-8.1%) and in 11th place the Volkswagen Santana with 309.000 (+12.1%).
