Turkish Cars Market 2016 hit the new all time record for the 2nd consecutive year just a breath from the 1 million units wall. Volkswagen king of the market while Fiat Egea best model.
Market Outlook
Revised data show that GDP contracted for the first time in seven years, disappointing the markets and contrasting the previous quarter’s expansion. Even the impressive double-digit expansion in government consumption was not enough to prevent the economy from contracting. The discouraging data put pressure on the lira, which has continued to depreciate since then, hitting a new low on 9 January.
The automotive industry however has kept in the year the strong path started in the 2015 and the year ended at new record level, not far from the milestone of 1 million sales, lost probably just for the slow December score.
Indeed according to data reported by the O.D.D., Otomotiv Distribütörleri Derneği (The Car Distributors Association in Turkey), in December the light vehicles sales had been 146.476, down 6.2%.
Anyway, the year ended at 983.676 units, up 1.6% from the previous record done in the 2015.
Competitive Arena
Volkswagen led the ranking with 134.535 units (-3.2%) ahead of Renault and Ford, while Land Rover, Skoda, Honda and Seat reported the highest increase.
Previously represented by Haco Group, Suzuki was the best performer of the year thanks to the launch of new models and the positive impact of new distributor, the Doğan Holding, which started operating in the 2015 and last year was fully effective.
Among the worst performers we found Volvo, Jeep, Alfa Romeo and Karsan, while Tata scored the sharpest slowdown losing 97.7%.
The Fiat Egea was on top of the list with 38.260 units (+574.3%) followed by the Ford Courier with 36.878 units and the Toyota Corolla sedan with 33.259 sales (-5.6%).
Roaring performances were recorded by the Opel Astra sedan and the Hyundai Tucson, improving 185.7% and 165.4% respectively.
