Argentina Car Market fell 3% in October ’12. Volkswagen back on top.

The Argentinian car market in October posted 66.780 sales, down 3.3% from last year. Year-to-date sales were 711.432, down 4.5% from last year.

In the focus2move September report over Argentina, we pointed out as recent years car sales look somehow doped by persistent double digit inflation, with the risk of sudden market collapse in case of Argentinian economic recession (actually the country is growing since 2002). In this direction, we read comments from sector leaders, recently reported by local media. The local car makers association (ACARA) has reported a comparison between the last 5 years industrial salaries increase (in the range of 25%) and car prices increase (in the range of 13%). The 12% annual gap is reflected in strong reduction of real cost of vehicles and had been the real propellant of the record market.

The feeling communicated by the sector leaders is optimistic about the next future. They simply project up the car sales in Brazil and consider their country sales correlated with the closer giant. In our view, they are underestimating the risk of potential internal recession. However, it is correct to project the Argentinian market up and up, until the bubble will not exploded.
