Argentinian Vehicles Market 2016 posted the best performance out of the last three years, pushed up by the outstanding increase hit in December and by economic improvements.

Market Outlook

The economy continues to feel the impact of tighter economic policies aimed at reducing macroeconomic imbalances. Some green shoots, however, are starting to emerge: on a sequential basis, the fall in economic activity softened in Q3, and consumer confidence and industrial production improved in December and November respectively.

The domestic vehicles market in 2016 interrupted the sharp decline scored in the previous two years, hitting the third best performance ever. However, the highest sales level established in 2013 with over 900.000 units was still far.

Indeed, according to data released by the ACARA and the ADEFA, the Argentinian Associations of car manufacturers and dealers, in December the vehicles sold had been 57.062 units, up 88.8% from the very weak correspondent month last year.

In the full year, the domestic vehicles sales kept the path with 699.530 sales (+14.0%), gaining almost 86.000 units over the 2015.

Competitive Arena

In 2016 Volkswagen was market leader with 108.463 units (-7.9%) ahead of Chevrolet and Renault, while among the highest increase of the year reported for BMW, Volvo, Mercedes, Honda and Audi. The best performance was reported by Jeep, improving 872%.

Ram recorded the sharpest sales losses of the year, followed by the double-digit fall of Mitsubishi, Iveco and Chery.

The Toyota Hilux  was the best-selling model with 31.964 units (+16.2%), while in 2nd place was the Fiat Palio with 27.394 (+11.0%) ahead of the Volkswagen Gol with 26.897 (-12.5%).
