Botswana Auto Sales 2016 have lost 4.4% after the previous year record while increasing their mix on total vehicles registered at 20% taking share against of imported used vehicles. Toyota is on top with near 40% of share.
The government passed an expansionary budget for FY 2017/2018 that seeks to support the fledgling economic recovery that started to take shape in the second half of last year. The budget aims to do so by increasing spending in infrastructure development, particularly on improving power and water provision.
The country has been hit by waves of power and water shortages over the last two years, aggravating its economic difficulties. The government will also seek to diversify the tax base so that it becomes less reliant on increasingly volatile diamond and Southern African Customs Union (SACU) related earnings
The automotive industry continues to import a huge bulk of pre-owned vehicles, representing near 20% of annual new vehicles registrations and there are no signs of a new policy aiming to limit this long-term negative trend, with impact on economy and pollutions, opening more spaces for new vehicles.
However, the new vehicles quota is growing while the total vehicles volume is declining, After having established the record level in the previous year, in the 2016 sales declined 4.4% at 7.317 units.
Toyota is market leader with a quota just below the 40%, three-time higher than those of the immediate followers, Nissan, Ford and Mazda. The year over year data show huge changes for many brands, do to a renewed mix between pre-owned and new vehicles imported.
