Brazilian Auto industry

Brazilian Auto industry fell 18% in January the worst Y.o.Y. performance since 2000 and is running to become the record market for level of plants overcapacity. Volkswagen outperformed behind Fiat and GM.

In January 2015 according to data released by Anfavea, the Brazilian Association of Car Manufacturers, total new Light Passengers Vehicles sold in Brazil have been 243.904, down 18.2% compared with the correspondent month last year.

The year on year fall reported last month was the worst performance since 2002.

Meeting Brazilian dealers in the last summer we have clearly perceived their opinion about the dangerous automotive national plan applied by the Rousseff’ government and no one of them were ready to vote her in the year end politic election.

Anyhow, she won and the plan is going ahead.

The result is a collapsing demand, due to the increase of vehicles prices and weak economic development while several plants are under construction and others are subject to expansion plan.

The overcapacity is already today above 25% and by 2018 could be at 50%.

In January all the top 15 brands reported losses

Fiat sold 49.675 vehicles (-21.6%) followed by Chevrolet with 46.879 (-13.0%) and by a dreadful Volkswagen third with a wide gap from the second at 39.461 sales (-28.5%).

Only two brands reported a positive month: Audi, 16th with 1.087 units +20.6% and the Chinese Lifan, 20th with 558 units, +53.7%.

As far as the Car Groups performance and ranking, the leader was F.C.A. with 21.3% of market share, ahead of General Motors with 19.2% and Volkswagen Group with 16.7%.

As far as best-selling models ranking, the  Fiat Palio was back on the top of the list with 14.432 sales (+2.1%) followed by the Chevrolet Onix with 13.462 (+44.9%) and the Hyundai HB20 (all body styles) with 13.064 (-3.5%).
