Following 28 month of continue grow June was negative for a little 0.8 percent ending a first half with a marginal growth for the largest global automotive market. The market leader Volkswagen is in troubles while Great Wall is the star of the year.

Economic Outlook

Economic growth stabilized in Q2, as authorities’ measures to shore up activity started to kick in. GDP expanded 7.0% in Q2, which was in line with the result tallied in Q1. The relatively strong data gathered at the end of Q2 suggest that sequential improvement in growth momentum could carry into Q3.

Meanwhile, in recent weeks, headlines were dominated by a sharp fall in the equity markets as a result of tighter regulations following the robust rally that began in mid-2014.

Although the impact on the economy is expected to be limited, the situation could handicap structural reforms.

Market Outlook

June was the first month reporting a negative year on year score following a series of 28th consecutive winning month. Anyhow, no one was surprised considering the market was sputtering since the last quarter 2014 and the growing rate in the most recent months were very tin, with a record low +1.4% marked in May.

Indeed consumer’s demand is low since month and several carmakers had invested huge amounts to support the dealer network to clean up stock of old models. Among them, the German BMW that supported dealers in the first quarter of the year.

According to data released by C.A.A.M., the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, total new light passengers vehicles sold in June have been 1.83 million following the 1.93 million of May (+1.6%) and the 2.02 million of April (up 2.1%).

During the first sixth month of the year, sales had been at 12.06 million, up 3.7% thanks to a still strong demand on car passengers while light commercial vehicles sales had been sharply negative.

Competitive Arena

Following the troubles already shown in the first quarter, during the second the market leader is in trouble, first time in years, losing market share (in June at 10.4%) and volume. In April Volkswagen reported a double-digit sales lost with 215.144 sales (-14.3%) and in May it was down 11.7% again with 212.588 sales, before losing 15.0% in June with 190.690 sales. First half ended at 1.4 million, -6.4%.

Wuling is losing sales as well losing 5.8% in the first half with 803.000 sales albeit in June it was up 2.1%.

Third in the first half was the Chinese ChangAn gaining terrain with sales up 14.7% despite dropping in June.

Behind Hyundai with 517.206 sales (-7.5%), Toyota with 489.211 (and very strong in June), Buick with 445.813 (-1.2%), Ford with 440.858 (+8.1%) and Great Wall – the fastest moving brand – 8th with 417.380 sales (+172.7%).

As far as the groups performance in June, the leader was again Volkswagen Group with 13.9% of market share (down 0.4 points of share from the previous month) with a still robust gap on the second, SAIC with 9.1% and the third, General Motors with 7.4%.
