China Vehicles Market in April

China Vehicles Market in April led for the first time by a SUV, thanks to the Great Wall Haval H6 jumped on top with a wonderful +43%. The market is moderately growing albeit economy is slowing down.

Market Outlook

While strong policy support fueled economic growth at the end of Q1, data for April suggest that policymakers took their foot off the gas pedal amid concerns that government-led credit growth could exacerbate domestic imbalances and derail much-needed economic reforms.

So far this year, Chinese authorities’ moves are in line with their objective to gradually implement economic reforms and tolerate slower growth, but also to step in if growth should fall below the threshold level established in March.

Meantime, in the automotive sector the domestic market kept growing moderately, in line with Government expectations.

In April, according to the data released by the  C.A.A.M., (China Association of Automobile Manufacturers), the total vehicles sales had been 2.122.000 (+4.9%). Year to date total light vehicles sales had been 8.771.061, up 5.7% compared to the same period last year.

Competitive Arena

In April, the market leader Volkswagen kept the positive pace albeit at slower speed selling 231.740 vehicles (+7.7%) obtaining the 11.1% of market share.

The top Chinese producer, leader in the light commercial vehicles segment Wuling is involved in a sharp crisis and in April has lost over 20%, in line with the first part of the year and now risks to lose the second place. April sales had been 107.940 sales (-22.3%).

The third, ChangAn is steady growing reducing the gap towards the second and last month sold 106.491 vehicles (+4.9%).

Behind, an amazing performance pushed up Honda, fourth with 97.155 sales (+22.8%) ahead of Hyundai with 96.838 (+6.0%), Toyota with 92.947 (+2.2%), Buick with 88.047 (+42.9%), Great Wall with 81.317 (-5.8%), and in 10th place Nissan with 73.645 (+7.0%).

As far as the Car Groups performance, the leader was Volkswagen with market share at 15.4% followed by Hyundai-Kia with 7.3%, General Motors with 6.3%, SAIC with 6.2% and ChangAn with 5.2%.

The best-selling model for the first time ever an SUV was market leader thanks to the first leadership gained by the Great Wall Haval H6 with 43.946 units (+39.5%) ahead of the former leader the Volkswagen Lavida with 41.408 (+18.1%), the Wuling Hongguang with 40.002 (-17.7%), the Hyundai Elantra with 35.658 sales (-16.4%) and the Nissan Sylphy with 29.498 (-5.7%)
