China Vehicles Sales hit the brakes in February

China Vehicles Sales hit the brakes in February due to dealers reluctance to stock while next months forecast are uncertain. Launching the new 560, Baojun improved sales by 210% advancing in sixth place, the best ever.

Economic Outlook

A combination of structural changes in the economy, subdued global demand and domestic challenges such as overcapacity in certain sectors and high corporate debt led growth to slow further in Q4. Although economic data at the outset of the year are distorted by the Lunar New Year festivities, latest indicators suggest that the country remains in a soft patch.

The manufacturing PMI hit an over-three-year low in January. Meanwhile, developments in the foreign exchange market have received most of the attention in recent weeks. The yuan recorded its largest gain in more than a decade on 15 February following the Central Bank governor’s declaration that there was no basis for devaluation.

That said, despite the surge, the yuan has not yet recovered the ground lost in January. In the political arena, the curtain will be lifted on the National People’s Congress (NPC) on 3 March, which will define the economic targets for this year.

Market Outlook

This year the week-long Lunar New Year holiday – grinding the entire country to a halt- fell in early February helping the January market to look positive compared with the previous year – when Lunar holiday hit volumes. Unfortunately, the calendar effect was heavy on February hitting a market already weak by itself.

New car sales fell modestly in February, capping off a two-month sales period that is traditionally affected by the Lunar New Year. China sold about 1.38 million cars—sedans, sport-utility vehicles and minivans—last month, down 1.5% from a year earlier. Light inventories on dealer lots could limit the size of an expected rebound in coming months if buyers can’t get the models they are looking for or if deals are modest.

Although February represented the first decline in six months, industry watchers pay closer attention to the 5.1% uptick during the first two months of the year because of the holiday’s impact.

More than 3.6 million vehicles were sold during that two-month span, representing a weaker growth rate than the 7.8% rise forecast by the  C.A.A.M., (China Association of Automobile Manufacturers).

Volkswagen kept losing grim in February with 196.908 sales (-13.9%) with market share at 12.2%, down 0.2 points from January. ChangAn was second with 107.799 sales (-5.9%) and Wuling third with 91.547 (-25.1%). So all the manufactures on podium are losing terrain towards followers.

Ford advanced in fourth place with 71.342 sales (+13.7%) ahead of Buick, up 10.4% at 65.337. However, the great star in February was the Chinese Baojun reported up 210% with 62.043 sales in the best rank ever, sixth.

In seven place Toyota  was up 10.8% with 59.977 sales and was followed by Great Wall with 59.301 (-4.2%), Hyundai with 53.662 (-28.5%) and in 10th place by Honda with 52.53 (+36.3%).

The best-selling model was the Volkswagen Lavida with 47.233 units (+4.0%) followed by the Wuling Hongguang with 41.230 (-19.9%), the Haval H6 with 33.062 (+63.8%) and two models made by Baojun, the new 560 with 30.970 sales and the 730 with 29.711 (+21.3%)
