China Vehicles Sales in January

China Vehicles Sales in January up 7% pushed by dealers de-stocking process. Chinese new brands are fast growing with Baojun doubling volume and Beijing and JAC very fast. Hyundai, Kia and Chevrolet disappointing.

Economic Outlook

A combination of structural changes in the economy, subdued global demand and domestic challenges such as overcapacity in certain sectors and high corporate debt led growth to slow further in Q4. Although economic data at the outset of the year are distorted by the Lunar New Year festivities, latest indicators suggest that the country remains in a soft patch.

The manufacturing PMI hit an over-three-year low in January. Meanwhile, developments in the foreign exchange market have received most of the attention in recent weeks. The yuan recorded its largest gain in more than a decade on 15 February following the Central Bank governor’s declaration that there was no basis for devaluation.

That said, despite the surge, the yuan has not yet recovered the ground lost in January. In the political arena, the curtain will be lifted on the National People’s Congress (NPC) on 3 March, which will define the economic targets for this year.

Market Outlook

According to data released by the C.A.A.M., (China Association of Automobile Manufacturers) the total new light passengers vehicles sold in January have been 2.575.850, up 7.8%.

According to release from LMC Automotive, Shanghai office, the “overriding factor behind the result was the de-stocking process that took place at the dealer level. According to figures released by the China Automobile Dealers Association (CADA), the dealer level inventory index stood at 0.99 months at the end of January 2016, 0.21 months lower than in January 2015. At the end of December 2015, the index declined to 1.02 months. This suggests that dealer‐level inventories were reduced by a total of around 0.06 mn units in the opening month of 2016.

Looking at the January Passenger Vehicle data on a segment basis, the largest contribution to overall market growth came, once again, from locally‐produced SUVs, sales of which rose by an impressive 60.9% YoY, nearly 0.3 mn vehicles more than in the same month of last year. The locally‐produced MPV sector performed well, too, with growth of 18.6% to 0.26 mn units.”

However, In January the three brands leader in the market reported sales down, with Volkswagen selling 313.137 vehicles (-5.4%) with market share at 12.4%, followed by ChangAn with 154.128 (-1.9%) and Wuling with 128.042 (-13.4%).

A solid growth was indeed reported for the fourth, Buick, up 36.2% at 123.428 sales, and for the fifth, Toyota, up 46.7% with 101.045 sales.

Hyundai, Kia and Chevrolet reported disappointing performances losing respectively 27%, 13% and 37%. Down Peugeot as well (-21%). Strong performances marked by Baojun 10th with 82.127 units, +115.8%, Bejjing at +68.2% and JAC, +38.4%.
