Chinese Car Sales reacted at government stimulus with a +12%. Mercedes +63%.

Chinese Car Sales reacted at government stimulus with a +12% and reducing the dealer inventory at best index since January. Volkswagen was finally up. Mercedes boomed sales +63% and Buick 37%.

Economic Outlook

Growth momentum in China is still waning at the outset of the final quarter of 2015 as the traditional sources of growth—investment and manufacturing—are faltering mainly due to overcapacity in certain sectors and insufficient global demand. On the upside, the fall in commodity prices is bolstering China’s already-massive trade surplus, while the upward trend in retail sales suggests that the economy is effectively pivoting the country’s economic model toward private consumption.

In an attempt to cement China’s economic transition, the Communist Party of China unveiled a draft of the 2016–2020 Five Year Plan at the party’s fifth plenum that was held from 26 to 29 October. Authorities vowed to upgrade the country’s all-important manufacturing sector in order to improve China’s value chain, increase the contribution of consumption to growth and end the controversial one-child policy.

Market Outlook

Following the October 5th introduction of incentives for low size-low emission vehicles the market reacted with the best year-on.year perormance in the last nine months with a robust double-digit growth.

Furthermore, the CADA’s (China Automobile Dealer Association) Passenger Car inventory Index fell to 1.29 during the month, its lowest level since January 2015 generating wide optimism for the next months.

October’s results clearly demonstrate that the government’s incentives have been effective. According to the latest CAAM data, sales of cars fitted with engines of less than 1.6 liters reached 1.33 mn units (excluding exports), a rise of 16.3% on the preceding month and equivalent to a 70% share of total Passenger Car sales.

As it was remarked by LMC Automotive: “Towards the end of October, the central government formally ended its three‐decade long one child policy by stating that every couple is now entitled to have two children. In light of this decision, the number births is expected to increase in the years to come, peaking at over twenty million newborns, according to an estimate by the National Health and Family Planning Commission. As a knock‐on effect of this impending baby boom, the Passenger Car market – with particular emphasis on SUVs and MPVs – is expected to reap the rewards as China’s families expand.”

In October, according to data released by the C.A.A.M., (China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, total new light passengers vehicles sold had been 2.251.332 (+12.2%) while the first ten months figures had been 19.6 million (+3.2%).
