Germany Auto Sales in May 2016 kept momentum fueled by strong fixed investment and steady private consumption. Audi advanced in second place outpacing the rival Mercedes. The Fiat 500 shines with 143.0%.

Market Outlook

Europe’s largest economy started the year on a high note, with quarterly GDP growing at the fastest pace in two years. The upturn was fueled by strong fixed investment and steady private consumption.

Meantime the automotive industry is keeping the momentum posting in May the 12th year on year increase in a series with a robust double-digit increase, the third best growth out of last year.

According to data released by the V.D.A. (Verband der Automobilindustrie) and the V.D.I.K. (Association of International Motor Vehicles Manufacturers), the car passenger’s sales in May have registered 286.931 units, up 11.9%.

Year to Date sales had been 1.394.276, up 6.8% compared to the same period of the previous year.

Competitive Arena

In May the market leader Volkswagen sold 55.472 sales  (-0.6%) and 19.4% of market share ahead of Audi with 26.713 (+27.0%) and Mercedes with 25.064 (+5.6%).

Behind Opel with 21.254 sales (+25.9%) followed by BMW with 21.119 (+14.9%), Ford with 19.164 (+13.9%), Skoda with 16.249 (+8.1%), Renault with 11.397 (+37.9%) and Hyundai with at 9.198 (+8.4%).

As far as the Car Groups performance, Volkswagen was on top of the list with 38.4% of market share ahead of Mercedes Daimler with 10.0% and BMW with 8.7%

As far as the models ranking, the Volkswagen Golf was of course in first place selling 20.772 units (-2.5%) followed by the Volkswagen Passat with 6.601 sales (-4.3%) and the Volkswagen Polo with 6.363 (+11.7%).

Strong increase were reported for the Volkswagen Touran 8th with +71.4% and the BMW 2 Series with +59.0%.
