India: car market boomed 33% in October. Renault shines driven by Duster.

October was the month of full recover for the car market in India and sales at 235.813 were up 32.7% from last year, with Year-to-date sales at 2.257.781, up 11.6%. Two months before the year end, a new all-time record for this market is now guarantied.

The recovery of full capacity at Suzuki-Maruti plants allowed at the market leader to partially reduce the customers’ orders portfolio built in the last three months. Moreover, the launch of new generation of the very popular Alto 800 was really successful, with over 21.000 customer’s orders taken in the first selling week (up to a Maruti’s official note).

Talking about marked competition we must start from the “Renault tale”:

Renault of India is writing the most interesting world’s success story this year. Starting from ground zero before launching the new Duster, a Dacia product distributed here under the Renault nameplate. Renault is booming considerably increasing sales each month. Now all models are on demand, not only the Duster. In October, Renault gained the 9th position in the market (12th year-to-date) with 6.790 sales and 2.9% of share, up 0.3 points from previous month. Please note Q1 and Q2 share were at 0.3%. The Duster was 15th this month, while Scala was 43rd and Pulse 49th.

Maruti sold 96.002 units with a share of 40.7%, flat on previous month and in line with Q1 and Q2 performance. The positive launch of the new Alto 800 will ensure a positive performance across the next months. Year-to-date sales were 890.650 with a share of 39.4%. Maruti held the top 4 models in the market, with Alto on top.

Hyundai in 2nd position sold 35.778 units with a share of 15.2%, up 1.0 points of share from September. Year-to-date sales were 329.828 with a share of 14.6%. Hyundai kept 3 models in the Top 10, with the i20 surged this month in 6th position.

Mahindra maintained the 3rd position (4th year-to-date) gained last month, with 26.932 sales and a share of 11.4%, up 0.8 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 214.868 with a share of 9.5%. However, the gap with Tata, 3rd Ytd, is too wide to be covered before the end of the year. Bolero in 5th was the best-selling model, while the new Quanto surged in 28th position. Last month, Mahindra launched the Rexton, a SUV produced by SsangYong.

Tata was 4rd with 21.119 sales and a share of 9.0%, down 0.9 points from previous month. Year-to-date October, Tata was 3rd with 258.162 sales and a share of 11.4%. Tata best-selling model, Indica, was 10th last month, while the Nano dropped in 21st, from 10th year-to-date.

Toyota in 5th sold 12.281 units with a share of 5.2%, the worst share of the year. Year-to-date sales were 149.818 with a share of 6.6%. The Innova was again the best-selling model, placing 11th this month.

Honda surged in 6th, outpacing Chevrolet and Ford, with 8.085 sales and 3.4% of share, up 0.9 from previous month. The best-selling model was the City, 22nd.

Ford was 7th with 7.577 sales and a share of 3.2%, down 0.4 from previous month and 0.1 from year-to-date. Ford top model was the Figo, 14th.
