India Car Market fell 4% in January 2013. Maruti climbed at 44%

In January, the cars sold in India were 234.235, down 4.7% from last year.

While sales dropped a whopping 56% to 15,209 units for TATA Motors on back of weak demand for small car Nano and products in the Indica and Indigo family Japanese automobile major Toyota too took a hit on dipping demand for cars from the Etios series.

Experts said a lack of new products an ageing line up and poor brand perception of TATA Motors passenger vehicles have been taking a toll on its sales. Tata Motors could only manage to sell 11,192 units of the Nano, Indica and Indigo combined last month against the initial targeted volumes of 20,000 units a month from Nano alone.

Looking at the top brands performance in the last month:

Maruti started the year booming share at 44.1% one of the best in last 5 years. January sales were 103.206, a really huge number for a single month. As usually, the top model ranking was dominated by Maruti- Suzuki, with 4 models in the Top 4.

Hyundai in 2nd position was able to defend its position in spite of strong Maruti attack. Sales were 34.302 with a share of 14.6%, down 0.1 points of share from the full year 2012 and 0.4 points from December. Three Hyundai models were placed in 6th, 7th and 8th position.

Mahindra was 3rd with 26.514 sales and a share of 11.3%, down 0.2 points of share from December and up 1.5 points from full year 2012. The top model was the Bolero, stable in 5th, while the XUV 500 was in 18th place.

Tata was 4rd with 15.209 sales and a share of 6.5%, down 0.8 points of share from the previous month and 4.4 points from full year 2012. Mr. Tata retired at the end of last December, but the risk is he need to come back is trend continue to be so negative.

Toyota was stable in 5th with 13.329 sales and a share of 5.7%, down 0.5 points from the previous month and 0.8 points from full year 2012. A very positive month was posted by Innova, placed 10th.

Chevrolet was 6th with 7.588 sales and a share of 3.2%, down 0.4 points from the previous month and 0.3 from the Full year 2012. The top model was the Beat, 21st.

Volkswagen surged in 7th from the 9th in December, with 6.920 sales and a share of 3.0%, up 0.7 points of share from the previous month and 0.5 points from full year 2012. The top model was the Polo in 15th position.

Ford was 8th with 6.062 sales and a share of 2.6%, down 0.7 points from the previous month and from the full year 2012. The best model was the Fiesta, only 46th.

Honda was 9th with 5.454 sales and a share of 2.3%, up 0.1 points from the previous month. The best model was the Brio in 29th.

Renault was 10th with 4.914 sales and 2.1% of share, down 0.9 points from the previous month. It was the first declining month since Duster launch in April 2012. Duster was voted as the Indian Car of the Year.

Looking at the top models ranking, no news there were among the top players. The leader, the Maruti Alto sold 28.685 units with share climbed at 12.2%

The Maruti Swift was second with a share of 8.1%, followed by the Dzire at 7.3% and the Wagon R at 6.4%. The 5th place was maintained by the Mahindra Bolero with a share of 4.5%.

Three Hyundai were following, the i20. I10 and Eon were respectively 6th, 7th and 8th.
