India car market up 2% in November 2012. Hyundai up, Honda down.

November car sales in India were 216.736, up 2.6% from last year, with Year-to-date sales at 2.474.000, up 10.8% confirming that 2012 will be the new all-time record volume for the market.

India is more and more relevant in the global automotive scenario and many new investments were recently announced. Reporting on the majors:

Mercedes-Benz India plans to increase its investment to Rs 850 crore (US$ 158.88 million) by 2014. The German car maker through its dealer partners has already invested over Rs 480 crore (US$ 89.72 million) in India. The company has also announced the starting of its new, start-of-the-art paint shop that is capable of water-based painting

The Volkswagen Group aims to increase output by 10-15 per cent on a €100 million (US$ 126.35 million) investment at its production facilities in Aurangabad and Chakan in Maharashtra

Nissan plans to introduce ten new passenger vehicles by the end of March 2016. Nissan India aims to double its vehicle sales in 2012-13 from 33,000 vehicles in 2011-12

Toyota plans to increase capacity at its two plants in Bidadi, Karnataka, from 310,000 units to 400,000 units a year. Capacity at the first plant would rise from 90,000 units to 100,000 units, at a cost of Rs 70 crore (US$ 13.08 million) and the second plant’s capacity is being increased from 120,000 units to 210,000 units, with an investment of Rs 830 crore (US$ 155.14 million)

Looking at the best brands performance in the last month:

Maruti sold 90.882 units with a share of 41.9%, up 1.2 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 981.532 with a share of 39.7%. Maruti dominated the market with 7 models in the top 12, with the new Alto confirmed as market leader.

Hyundai in 2nd position confirmed its progress selling 34.751 units with a share of 16.0%, up 0.8 points of share from the previous month. This was the best share this year. Year-to-date sales were 364.579 with a share of 14.7%. Hyundai posted 5 models in the Top 20, with the i10 as best model in 6th place.

Mahindra was again 3rd (4th year-to-date) with 24.605 sales and a share of 11.4%, flat. Year-to-date sales were 239.473 with a share of 9.7%. The top model was the Bolero stable in 5th place with other 3 models in the top 30.

Tata was 4rd (3rd year-to-date) with 18.031 sales and a share of 8.3%, down 0.7 points from previous month. Year-to-date sales were 276.193 with a share of 11.2%. The top model was the Indica stable in 10th.

Toyota in 5th sold 10.352 units with a share of 4.8%, the worst share of the year, down 0.4 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 160.170 with a share of 6.5%. The Japanese car maker had shut down its plant for 15 days to ramp up production, which was the main reason for the negative performance.

Chevrolet was 6th with 7.230 sales and a share of 3.3%, up 0.4 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 85.120 with a share of 3.4%. The top model was the Beat, 25th.

Renault surged in 7th position ( 12th year-to-date) with 6.607 sales and 3.0% of share, up 0.1 points from previous month. Year-to-date sales were 29.233 with a share of 1.2%. Please note as in January Renault share was at 0.3%.The top model was the Duster surged in 13th position. Renault India has begun the export of the right-hand drive Duster from Chennai, where the car is manufactured. The first batch of 350 export Dusters are headed for the UK and Ireland.

Ford was 8th with 5.944 sales and a share of 2.7%, down 0.5 from previous month. Year-to-date sales were 81.133 with a share of 3.3%. The best model was the Figo stable in 14th place.

Volkswagen was 9th with 5.681 sales and a share of 2.6%, up 0.2 points from the previous month. The top model was the Polo in 21st position.

Honda was 10th, down 4 spots, with 3.711 sales and a share of 1.7%, the worst this year, down 1.1 points from the year-to-date.

Looking at the top models, last months reported no surprises on the top, with stable positions in the top 11. The first changes was in 12th were landed the Maruti Omnia gaining 6 spots.

The Renault Duster did its record, in 13th while Nissan Sunny and the Chevrolet sail and Tavera posted relevant grew.
