India Car Scene in March 2016

India Car Scene in March 2016 was dominated by Renault, advanced in 5th place thanks to the tremendous success of the new Kwid. The market was shy albeit still strong economic environment. Next future predicted strong.

Market Outlook

India Car scene confirms the lost steam after the rapid development started in mid 2014 and March improved slight despite representing the closing of the fiscal year. However, strong private consumption should continue to fuel robust rates of growth going forward with the Indian GDP projected to expand over 7% in the next fiscal year albeit slow reform implementation may limit the economy’s trajectory.

According with data reported by the SIAM, the Society of Indian Automotive Manufacturers, in March 2016 car passenger’s sales in India had been 252.904, up 3.6% from the previous year. The last was the 17th year on year increase in a row, the 22nd out of the last 23 months since May 2014, the month of elections victory for the current government.

Competitive Arena

This month we must start talking on Renault, to underline the huge success of the French brand driven by the tremendous sales level hit by the compact SUV Kwid, produced in India. In March Renault hit the best ever sales level and ranking, advancing in 5th place with 12.424 sales (+124%).

Renault put in second flat the however outstanding performance scored by Ford, improved 44.0% with 7.565 sales and ending the first quarter with 2.093 sales (+12.5%)

On top of the list, the leader Maruti reported positive figures with 118.895 units (+14.6%) while Hyundai sold 41.201 units (+4.2%) and Mahindra improved substantially at 23.377 sales (+15.6%) keeping the serial introduction of new models.

Behind, Honda fell again with 17.430 units (-23.2%). while Tata and Toyota, reported a huge fall respectively of 43.8% and 42.7%.

The best-selling model was the Maruti Alto 22.101 units (-11.5%) ahead of the Maruti Dzire with 17.796 sales (-1.0%), the Maruti Wagon R with 14.577 (-4.1%) and the Maruti Swift with 14.524 (-4.2%). All these “traditional” leaders are declining while new babies are growing. Give a look into the list at Renault Kwid, Hyundai Creta, Maruti Baleno, Ford Aspire and others.
