Indian car market dropped 9% in May. Maruti loses 5 points of share.

Posting the 6th year-on-year declining in a row, Indian car market in May maintained the negative trend with 196.002 sales, down 9.2% from last year. Year-to-date sales were 1.098.569, down 10.9% from last year.

The increase of duty on S.U.V. applied since the first of April was certainly contributing on reducing the consumer demand, having hit the segment more dynamic in last twelve months, but this was not the only reason for decline.

High interest rates, rising fuel costs and the dark clouds hanging over India’s economy have all slashed demand for cars in a market where ownership levels lag Asian rival China and global automakers have made big bets with hopes of booming growth.

Looking at the top brands performance in the last month:

Maruti in 1st posted an awful month after the strong performance of April, selling 77.821 units with a share of 39.7%, down 5.2 points from the previous month. Year-to-date Maruti sales were 477.395 with a share of 43.6%. Maruti held 9 models in the top 50, with the Dzire as market leader.

Hyundai was 2nd, selling 31.102 vehicles with a share of 16.4%, up 0.3 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date May sales were 166.667 with a share of 15.2%. Hyundai held 6 models in the top 50, with the i10 in 6th position.

Mahindra & Mahindra was 3rd selling 22.244 units with a share of 11.3%, up 1.0 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 118.775 with a share of 10.9%. Mahindra held 7 models in the top 50, with the Bolero in 5th position.

Honda in 4th (6th year-to-date) posted a positive month, selling 11.340 units with a share of 5.8%, up 1.6 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 41.833 with a share of 3.8%. The Amaze was 8th.

Tata was 5th selling 11.034 units with a share of 5.7%, stable from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 60.873 with a share of 5.6%. The best-selling model was the Indica /Vista in 20th position.

Toyota was 6th selling 10.023 units with a share of 5.1%, up 0.6 points from the previous month. Year-to-date it was 4th selling were 64.567 with a share of 5.9%. The top model was the Innova in 16th position.

Chevrolet was 7th selling 8.496 units with a share of 4.3%, up 0.2 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 40.392 with a share of 3.7%. The Sail was 22nd.

Renault was 8th with 6.300 sales, only 14 pieces less than April, with a share of 3.2%, up 0.1 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 32.483 with a share of 3.0%. The best-selling model was the Duster in 12th position.

Looking at the top models, the Maruti Dzire was the market leader, selling 17.265 units with a share of 8.8%, down 0.7 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 92.165 with a share of 8.4%.

The Alto was 2nd with 16.411 sales and a share of 8.4%, down 1.3 points from the previous month, followed by the Swift in 3rd with 14.353 sales and a share of 7.3%, down 0.8 points from the previous month.

The Wagon R was 4th with 12.952 units and a share of 6.6%, up 0.3 points from the previous month, followed by the Bolero in 5th with 9.780 sales and a share of 5.0%, up 0.2 points from April, and by the i10 n 6th with 8.469 sales and a share of 4.3%, up 0.3 points from the previous month.

The Eon was 7th with 8.406 units and a share of 4.3%, up 0.2 points from the previous month, followed by the Amaze in 8th, up 5 spots from April, with 6.036 sales and a share of 3.1%, up 0.7 points from the previous month.

The i20 was 9th with 5.701 units and a share of 32.9%, down 0.2 points from the previous month, followed by the Indica/Vista in 10th with 5.500 sales and a share of 2.8%, down 0.1 points from April.
