Israel: May 2013 car market advanced 7%. Mazda pushed up by Mazda2 sales.

According to the Israeli Department of Transportation System, car sales in May were 18.912, up 7.0%. Cumulated sales in May were 93.945, up 3.0% from last year. This market was the World’s 35th passenger vehicle market in the first quarter 2013.

Last month was really tough for the market leader, the Korean Hyundai, which lost 3.2 points of share, while Mazda, market dominator until three years ago and now felt behind, resurged with a phenomenal Mazda2 performance.

Looking at top brands performance:

Hyundai‘s performance was quite negative in spite of it retained the market leadership. Indeed sales were 2.818 with share dropped at 14.9%, down 3.2 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 15.447 with a share of 16.4%. The compact i30 advanced at leadership among models while the city car i20 was 4th.

Toyota rapidly recovered the April shortfall, advancing in 2nd place from the6th with 1.559 sales and a share of 8.2%, up 2.5 points from the previous month. Year-to-date it was 3rd with 7.972 sales and 8.5% of share. The top model was the Yaris in 8th, up 2 spots.

Kia was 3rd selling 1.550 cars with a share of 8.2%, down 0.7 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales it was 2nd with 8.472 sales and a share of 9.0%. Kia held 4 models in the top 50, with the Picanto in 3rd position.

Ford was 4th with 1.357 units and a share of 7.2%, down 0.5 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 7.083 with a share of 7.5%. The top model was the Focus in 2nd place.

Skoda was 5th selling 1.289 units with a share of 6.8%, up 0.3 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 5.478 with a share of 5.8%. The Octavia advanced in the 10th place.

Mazda was the winner of the month advancing in 6th place with 1.217 sales and 6.4% of share, up 2.9 points from April. Year-to-date sales were 5.305 with a share of 5.6%. Mazda2 jumped in 6th from 30th.

Renault was 7th selling 939 units with a share of 5.0%, down 0.1 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 4.160 with a share of 4.4%. The top model was the Fluence stable in 5th position.

Suzuki was 8th selling 924 units with a share of 4.9%, up 0.8 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 4.445 with a share of 4.7%. The best-selling model was the SX4 in 21st.

Hyundai i30 was the market leader with 978 units and a share of 5.2%, up 0.5 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 3.855 with a share of 4.1%.

Ford Focus was 2nd with 761 units and a share of 4.0%, down 1.4 points from the previous month, followed by Kia Picanto, 3rd with 758 sales and a share of 4.0%, down 0.7 points from the previous month.

Hyundai i20 was 4th with 659 units and 3.5% of share, flat from April, followed by Renault Fluence, stable in 5th with 583 sales and a share of 3.1%, down 0.3 points from the previous month.

Mazda2 in 6th from 30th was the surprise of the month, thanks to 577 sales and a share of 3.1%, up 2.2 points from April.

Hyundai i35 dropped from leadership to the 7thplace with 524 sales and 2.8% of share, down 2.7 points from the previous month, followed by Toyota Yaris, 8th with 412 units and 2.2% of share.

Nissan Micra and Skoda Octavia ended the Top 10 list.
