Israel car market down 2% in Q1 2013. Nissan & Renault the winners.

In spite of a good start posted in January, when the market was positive 12.6%, the lost suffered in February (7.5%) and in March (12.3%) moved the Israel car market in negative territory, with total first quarter sales at 57.573, down 2.3% from last year.

The market was hit by the new car taxation structure introduced on January 1st. In spite of local estimate feared a double digit decline, so far the market was quite stable.

Looking at top brands performance:

Hyundai, after a brilliant beginning in January, posted the following months more and more downhill. In March Hyundai sold 2.683 vehicles with a share of 14.9%, down 1.4 points of share from the previous month and 2.9 from January. Year-to-date March sales were 9.508 with a share of 16.5%. Hyundai held 6 models in the top 50, with the i20 in 2nd position.

Kia surged in 2nd position (3rd year-to-date) up 2 spots from February, selling 1.956 units with a share of 10.9%, up 3.4 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 5.378 with a share of 9.3%. Kia held 4 models in the top 50, with the Picanto in 3rd position.

Toyota was 3rd (2nd year-to-date) selling 1.679 units with a share of 9.4%, down 1.5 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 5.420 with a share of 9.4%. Toyota held 6 models in the top 50, with the Yaris in 7th position.

Ford fell to the 4th position, posted a better month than February but a negative month for its previous results. Ford sold 1.345 units with a share of 7.5%, up 1.5 points from the previous month and down 2.9 points from the last quarter of 2012. Year-to-date sales were 4.390 with a share of 7.6%. The Focus was the market leader.

Mazda was 5th, selling 1.057 vehicles, only 40 more than Nissan, with a share of 5.9%, down 1.5 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 3.488 with a share of 6.0%. The top model was the 2 in 8th position.

Nissan in 6th was the real winner of this quarter. March sales were 1.017 with a share of 5.7%, down 0.1 points from the previous month. Year-to-date March sales were 3.280 with a share of 5.7%. The best-selling model was the Juke in 9th position.

Skoda fell to the 7th position, selling 877 units with a share of 4.9%, down 0.5 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 2.962 with a share of 5.1%. The best-selling model was the Octavia in 23rd position.

Volkswagen was 8th (9th year-to-date) selling 789 units with a share of 4.4%, down 0.2 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 2.374 with a share of 4.1%. The top model was the Golf in 16th position.

Looking at the top selling models, the Ford Focus in 1st sold 1.187 units with a share of 6.6%, up 2.2 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 3.575 with a share of 6.2%.

The Hyundai i20 was 2nd selling 1.100 units with a share of 6.1%, up 3.4 points from the previous month, followed by the Picanto in 3rdwith 897 sales and a share of 5.0%, up 1.9 points from the previous month.

The i35 was 5th selling 564 units with a share of 3.1%, down 0.9 points from the previous month, followed by the Rio in 5th with 525 sales and a share of 2.9%, up 0.3 points from the previous month, and by the i30 in 6th with 517 sales and a share of 2.9%, up 0.4 points from the February.

The Yaris was 7th, up 41 spots from 2012 rank, selling 476 units with a share of 2.7%, up 1.5 points from the previous month, followed by the Mazda 2 in 8th with 441 sales and a share of 2.5%, up 1.8 points from the previous month.

The Juke was 9th, selling 435 units with a share of 2.4%, up 0.3 points from the previous month, followed by the Ibiza in 10th, with 370 sales and a share of 2.1%, down 0.1 points from February.
