Israel car market outlook in May was deteriorated by two consecutive negative month albeit the year on year figures was the best ever. Kia is shaking the market and after having overtaken Toyota is now challenging the Hyundai leadership. Kia Sportage jumped as market leader.

Economic Environment

In the first quarter, Israel’s economy decelerated and expanded 2.5% over the previous quarter. The figure marked a significant slowdown from the 6.6% expansion recorded in the fourth quarter when the economy recovered from the Israel–Gaza conflict. Q1’s softer expansion came on the back of a deceleration in both domestic and external demand.

Data from the second quarter point to a further slowing of the economy. In April, the Bank of Israel Composite State of the Economy Index dropped to a nine-month low. In addition, in the same month, businesses were less confident and the consumer confidence index remained in negative territory.

In the political sphere, on 14 May, Israel’s parliament approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s new narrow majority. Netanyahu might try to lure other parties into his coalition in order to strengthen it, although in the meantime he may find it difficult to move forward with any controversial legislation.

Market Outlook

Israeli market is one of the more stable in the MENA area with a medium terms growing trend that allowed the advance in the 37th place worldwide, after the record volume hit in the 2014.

This year the market started booming fueled by strong internal demand and the launch of several new models and the first quarter ended with a double-digit growth and was the best ever.

Starting from April, the demand rapidly declined and Y.o.Y. comparison was negative. Following the April -8.1% also May was down.

Indeed, according to data released by the Israeli Department of Transportation System total new Light Passenger Vehicles sold have been 20.763, down 4.6%% from the correspondent month last year.

Moreover the year to date figures stand up with total sales at 118.451, up 4.3% from the 2014 level.

Competitive Arena

In the 2015 the market is shaken by the aggressive growth of Kia that started from the third place gained in the 2014 and is growing fast. After having outpaced Toyota, it is now challenging the market leader, Hyundai.

In May, Hyundai was on top with 3.239 sales (-11.9%) while Kia behind was at 2.999 (+41.5%) and Toyota was at 2.459 (-3.8%).

The fastest growing player was Subaru (8th with 765 sales, +162.9%) while several brands reported heavy losses including Mazda (7th with 807 sales, -40.7%), Renault (9th with 648, -34.3%), Chevrolet (10th with 639, -25.3%) and Honda (15th with 392, -47.5%).

As far as the groups performance, the dominator is the Hyundai Group that in May scored a share of 30.0%, followed by Volkswagen Group with 15.1% and by Toyota with 12.5%.

The best-selling models ranking in may was led by the Kia Sportage that jumped ahead with 1.338 unit (+555.9%) outpacing Toyota Corolla (2nd with 1.094 units, -20.6%) and Kia Picanto (3rd with 836, +2.8%).

Others fast growing models were the Subaru Impreza (11th with 432 units, +178.7%), the Hyundai ix35 (13th with 397, +111.2%) and the Toyota Verso (15th with 319, +138.1%).
