Japan Domestic Car Market in February 2016

Japan Domestic Car Market in February 2016 has lost for the 6th month in a row. The Abenomics is not working and the country is running towards new elections. Hybrids engines fast on Prius, slow on Aqua.

Economic Outlook

After three years of Abenomics, the Japanese economy seems unable to return to a sustainable growth path. In Q4, GDP fell 1.4% over the previous quarter in seasonally adjusted annualized terms (SAAR), which contrasted Q3’s 1.3% rise.

More recent data suggest that weakness observed in 2015 carried into this year within a context of a relatively strong yen, faltering global demand (particularly from China) and growing doubts about Shinzo Abe’s ability to rekindle economic growth.

Against this backdrop, on 26 February, the government announced that it could postpone the controversial sales tax hike scheduled for 2017 in order to avoid a sharp economic downturn. Analysts believe that if the tax hike is postponed, it could trigger another election as it happened in November 2014.

Market Outlook

According to the data released by the JADAJAMA and JAIA, (the Japanese Associations of car manufacturers, importers and dealers), in February 2016 total vehicles sales were 450.505, down 6.4% posting the 6th year-on-year fall in a row. Year to date February sales had been 832.705, down 5.6%.

Great expectations are in place for March as the Government should announce to postpone the already announced tax hike.

In February Toyota fell in double-digit with 114.376 vehicles registered while the immediate followers have lost few points. Honda only 3.7% with 69.017 sales, Nissan 2.9% with 62.874 sales, Daihatsu 6.9% with 58.797 sales and Suzuki 2.0% with 57.008 units.

As in January, Lexus was the best Japanese brand gaining 16.4%. Among the importers, Smart boomed sales (+2094%).

as model-wise, while the new Prius kept the fast start (+44.9%) the Aqua has lost 38.5% falling from the second to the 5th place. Second was the Daihatsu Tanto and third the Honda N-Box.
