Japanese car market was down 11% in March 2013. Mercedes & BMW strong share.

The long wave of strong 2012 scrap incentives is finally creating its effect, with declining consumer’s demand and relatively low showroom traffic. However, total Japanese light passenger vehicles market volume remained at respectable level, posting in March 644.475 sales, down only 11.3% from last year. Year-to-date sales in March were 1.503.859, down 8.4%.

Looking at the best brands performance:

Toyota strongly dominated, selling 190.913 vehicles, almost 100.000 more than Honda, with a share of 29.6%, up 0.4 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date March share were 437.902 with a share of 29.1%. Toyota held 17 models in the top 50, with the Aqua as market leader.

Honda conquered the 2nd position, up 1 spot from February, selling 92.092 units with a share of 14.3%, up 0.4 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 214.144 with a share of 14.2%. Honda held 5 models in the top 50, with the NBOX in 4th position.

Nissan in 3rd lost its previous position, selling 85.984 units with a share of 13.3%, down 1.3 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 211.980 with a share of 14.1%. Nissan held 6 models in the top 50 with the Note in 6th position.

Suzuki climbed to the 4th position, up 1 spot from February, selling 84.459 with a share of 13.1%, up 0.7 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 193.531 with a share of 12.9%. The best-selling model was the WagonR in 3rd position.

Daihatsu in 5th wasn’t able to maintain its position, selling 77.787 units with a share of 12.1%, down 0.5 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 183.951 with a share of 12.2%. The top model was the Move in 5th position.

Mazda was 6th, selling 28.070 units with a share of 4.4%, up 0.1 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 66.413 with a share of 4.4%. The best-selling model was the Demio in 21st position.

Subaru in 7th place sold 24.629 with a share of 3.8%, up 0.6 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 53.885 with a share of 3.6%. The top model was the Impreza in 19th position.

Mitsubishi was 8th with 18.200 units with a share of 2.8%, stable from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 41.779 with a share of 2.8%. The eK was 36th.

Volkswagen was 9th selling 8.405 units with a share of 1.3%, up 0.1 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 18.148 with a share of 1.2%. The top model was the Golf in 50 the position.

Mercedes climbed to the 10th position (11th year-to-date) selling 6.305 units with a share of 1.0%, up 0.3 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 18.148 with a share of 0.8%.

Looking at the best-selling models, the Toyota Aqua in 1st sold 33.693 with a share of 5.2%, up 0.1 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 46.992 with a share of 3.1%.

The Prius was 2nd, selling 32.527 units with a share of 5.0%, up 0.1 points from the previous month, followed by the WagonR in 3rd, up 2 spots from February, with 28.919 sales and a share of 4.5%, up 0.9 points from the previous month.

The NBOX was 4th selling 26.696 units with a share of 4.1%, down 0.6 points from the previous month, followed by the Move in 5th with 25.412 sales and a share of 3.9%, down 0.3 points from the previous month.

The Note was 6th selling 21.336 units with a share of 3.3%, down 0.2 points from the previous month, followed by the Fit in 7th, up 2 spots from February, with 19.819 sales and a share of 3.1%, up 0.2 points, and by the Honda N ONE in 9th, up 2 spots from February, with 16.133 sales and a share of 2.5%, up 0.2 points from the previous month.

Behind it was a positive month for the new Suzuki Spacia in 20th, up 75 spots from February, for the Mazda CX-5 in 23rd, up 24 spots, and for the Subaru Stella in 40th, up 16 spots from the previous month.
