Malaysia Vehicles Sales in the first half fell in double-digit hit by slow speed in the domestic consumer’s demand. Perodua led the models ranking with Axia, Alza and Myvi in the podium.

Market Outlook

Although Malaysia’s economy would appear to be one of the least impacted by the UK’s June Brexit vote, its high trade exposure to Europe and status as a financial hub make it more susceptible to Brexit headwinds that some other ASEAN countries. Concerns in this regard to have been echoed by the Malaysia Central Bank, which cited the need to shield the country from external risks as motivation behind its July rate cut.

For the Malaysian cars market this first half has been a real nightmare with a persistent decline and with bad expectation over the next period, although June flat over the last year.

Indeed, according to data released by the M.A.A., the Malaysian Automotive Association, in June total vehicles sales were 57.358 (-0.1% ).

Year to date June sales had been 275.459, down 14.5 from the same period of last year.

Competitive Arena

In the first half-year, Perodua retained the leadership with 97.370 sales  (-14.9%) and 35.3% of market share. Honda was second with 39.654 units (-9.0%) ahead of Proton with 35.727 (-28.8%), Toyota with 27.249 (-29.8%), Nissan with 21.148 (-9.2%), Mazda with 7.346 (+11.6%) and Isuzu with 6.111 (+6.1%).

As far as the Car Groups performance, Perodua was again the leader with 35.3% of market share, ahead of Honda with 14.4%, Toyota with 11.2%, Proton with 13.0% and Renault-Nissan with 7.8%.

As far as the best-selling models performance, the Perodua Axia led the competition with 46.312 sales (-7.1%) followed by the Perodua Alza with 25.917 (+2.1%), the Perodua Myvi with 25.873 (-2.8%), the Proton Saga with 24.402 (-3.1%) and the Honda City with 17.015 (-18.1%).
