Peru’s economy is taking a hit from a corruption scandal that is reverberating through Latin America. The Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht is accused of bribing high-ranking officials in Peru in order to win several construction projects across the country, including a USD 5 billion gas pipeline. Now these are set to be suspended until alternative partners are found. Against this backdrop, the finance ministry cut Peru’s growth forecast sharply for this year as investment is will be hampered as a result of the freeze in some public infrastructure plans.
In a recession environment, in which the country is enveloped since a couple of years, the automotive industry has lost the outstanding momentum long almost 15 years since the start of the current century, when annual new vehicles sales boosted from near 10.000 up a record of 177.524, written in the 2013. Since then, sales are declining
According to data released by the A.R.A.P.E.R. (Association of Peruvian Car Manufacturers) in the 2016 sales had been 153.876, down 2.3%, the term moderately decline in a row.
Considering the very bad political and economic mood, the market is keeping a good performance, while risks for sharp decline are still live and could materialize in the 2017.
