Portugal: car market fell 5% in May 2013. Citroen was hot.

In May 2013 the car sold in Portugal were 10.057, down 5.7% from last year. However, year-to-date sales were 42.200, down 0.8%. Premium brands, BMW, Mercedes and Audi, had lost terrain in May, losing in total 5.3 points of share. This fact can be interpreted as a very positive indicator of a market that is moving toward normality. Indeed, during the last 6 years of deep decline, premium brands share progressively grew, to achieve around one fourth of sales, as middle and low class was not able to sustain the expense of a new vehicle.

Looking at the best brands performance:

Renault recovered market leadership, selling 1.092 vehicles with a share of 10.9%, up 1.4 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 4.299 with a share of 10.2%.

Volkswagen was 2nd with 1.038 units and a share of 10.3%, up 0.2 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date May sales were 4.264 with a share of 10.1%.

Peugeot advanced in 3rd selling 913 units with a share of 9.1%, up 0.4 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 3.715 with a share of 8.8%.

Opel was 4th , up 2 spots, selling 781 units with a share of 7.8%, up 1.0 points from the previous month. Year-to-date Opel was 5th with 2.939 sales and a share of 7.0%.

Citroen was the Winner of the Month, jumping in 5th with 691 sales and a share of 6.9%, up 3.1 points from the previous month and 2.2 points from Q1 2013. Year-to-date it was 9th with 2.122 sales and a share of 5.0%.
