Portugal: April ’13 Car Market slipped again. Volkswagen leader.

In April 2013 the cars sold in Portugal were 8.032, down 4.4% from last year. However, year-to-date sales were 32.143, up 0.8%. The market is animated by the tough battle for the leadership between Volkswagen and Renault, both at 10.0% of market in the year-to-date figures, with only 19 units more for the German make. Behind, premium brands are performing very well, with BMW in third place, Mercedes in fifth and Audi in seventh.

Looking at the best brands performance:

Volkswagen was the market leader, selling 813 units with a share of 10.1%, down 0.2 points of share from the previous month and up 0.1 points from the first quarter of 2013. Year-to-date April sales were 3.226 with a share of 10.0%.

Renault fell to the 2nd position, selling 767 vehicles with a share of 9.5%, down 1.0 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 3.207 with a share of 10.0%.

BMW in 3rd posted a brilliant result after the negative performance of March, selling 710 units with a share of 8.8%, up 2.2 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 2.542 with a share of 7.9%.

Peugeot was 4th, selling 697 units with a share of 8.7%, up 0.4 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 2.802 with a share of 8.7%.

Mercedes was 5th, selling 556 units with a share of 6.9%, down 0.3 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 2.323 with a share of 7.2%.

Opel was 6th selling 544 units with a share of 6.8%, down 0.8 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 2.158 with a share of 6.7%.

Audi climbed to the 7th position, selling 534 units with a share of 6.6%, up 1.2 points from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 2.058 with a share of 6.4%.

Toyota jumped to the 8th position (12th year-to-date) selling 353 units with a share of 4.4%, up 0.8 points of share from the previous month. Year-to-date sales were 1.206 with a share of 3.8%.
