Switzerland’s auto market stable in the first months of 2024. Total sales throughout February totalled 18,468 units (+7.4%). BMW, up 4 spots, becomes the new market leader (+12.2%).
Market Trend and Outlook
The Swiss auto market in February up 7.4% totalling 18,468 registrations, regaining momentum after that January interrupted a 16 month positive string. YTD sales reach 33,673 units (+0.1%).c
Looking at cumulative data up to February 2024 brand-wise, the leader becomes BMW -up 4 spots- with 3,103 sales (+12.2%), followed by Skoda at 3,036 (-3.0%) and Volkswagen -down 2 spots- at 2,826 (-21.8%)
In 4th position ranks Mercedes at 2,359 sales (-14.9%). Next up we have Audi -down 2 spots- at 2,163 sales (-25.6%), followed by Toyota with 2,132 registrations (-2.3%) and Volvo -up 3 spots- with 1,361 units sold (+14.7%).
Tesla -up 17 spots- ranks in 8th with 1,330 auto registrations (+329.0%). Followed by Dacia -down 1 spot- with 1,320 units sold (+2.5%). Closing the top 10 we have Ford -down 3 spots- with 1,262 sales (-15.4%).
Looking at specific models the Skoda Octavia becomes the best-selling model with a 91.8% year-on-year growth, followed by the Tesla Model Y in second up 291.6%.
Medium-Term Market Trend
The Swiss auto market in the past decade has had many ups and downs. From 2010 to 2019 sales remained above the 300k mark, reaching a maximum in 2015 at 345,219 sales and a minimum in 2018 at 304,871 registrations.
In 2020 with the arrival of the pandemic sales dropped for the first time bellow 300k reaching 236,825 (-23.9%).
In 2021 the Swiss auto market slightly recovered reporting a 0.7% growth in sales. While in 2022 sales reached 225,833, the lowest level of the last decade (-5.3%). A combination of factors are behind the current industry struggle: the disruption in the global supply chain caused by a lack of raw materials, in particular for the production of microchips and Governments push towards Evs.
Despite, the Swiss auto market in 2023 closed with a total of 251,959 sales and increasing 11.6% compared to last year.
