Switzerland’s auto market slightly decreased after the first months. Total sales throughout March totaled 23,443 units (-6.9%). BMW and Skoda reach the top 3, closing the gap to the market leader Volkswagen.
Market Trend and Outlook
The Swiss auto market in March was down 6.9% totaling 23,443 registrations, this shows a loss of momentum that started in January which interrupted a 16-month positive string. YTD sales reach 57,116 units (-2.9%).
Looking at cumulative data up to March 2024 brand-wise, the leader is Volkswagen with 5,183 sales (-15.5%), followed by BMW -up 1 spot- at 5,170 (+4.0%) and Skoda -up 1 spot- at 4,789 (-0.8%)
In 4th position ranks Mercedes -down 2 spots- at 4,376 sales (-12.1%). Next up we have Audi at 3,541 sales (-26.1%), followed by Toyota with 3,369 registrations (-3.4%) and Tesla -up 8 spots- with 3,264 units sold (+109.0%).
Volvo -up 2 spots- ranks in 8th with 2,099 auto registrations (+8.1%). Followed by Ford -down 2 spots- with 2,088 units sold (-19.4%). Closing the top 10 we have Dacia -down 2 spots- with 2,030 sales (-8.6%).
Looking at specific models the Tesla Model Y becomes the best-selling model with a 113.8% year-on-year growth, followed by the Skoda Octavia in second up 76.4%.
Medium-Term Market Trend
The Swiss auto market in the past decade has had many ups and downs. From 2010 to 2019 sales remained above the 300k mark, reaching a maximum in 2015 at 345,219 sales and a minimum in 2018 at 304,871 registrations.
In 2020 with the arrival of the pandemic sales dropped for the first time bellow 300k reaching 236,825 (-23.9%).
In 2021 the Swiss auto market slightly recovered reporting a 0.7% growth in sales. While in 2022 sales reached 225,833, the lowest level of the last decade (-5.3%). A combination of factors are behind the current industry struggle: the disruption in the global supply chain caused by a lack of raw materials, in particular for the production of microchips and Governments push towards Evs.
Despite, the Swiss auto market in 2023 closed with a total of 251,959 sales and increasing 11.6% compared to last year.
